Living in the wilderness has some compensations. True we have no services that those in urban settings take for granted, trash collection, cable TV, municipal water or sewer systems to name a few. But we do have “Honey Wagons”, these are driven by the folks who empty septic tanks every few years, not the world’s most desirable occupation but improved by a sense of Humour.

Keeping a Diary
When I retired two and a half years ago, I began writing my diary each day.
Having recently read these words of the poet, William Allingham, I am wondering whether there is any truth in them, and maybe it is time for a change.
“A man who keeps a diary pays, Due toll to many tedious days; But life becomes eventful – then, His busy hand forgets the pen. Most books, indeed, are records less Of fulness than of emptiness.”
Do you keep a diary?
Talking about moustaches
There is apparently much laughter, hilarity and lots of ‘lol’s’ over on the Daily Mail’s page which describes this photograph of an unfortunate shadow induced moustache as having gone viral and possibly ‘one of the most awkward in history’ (Em, I don’t think so.) A Reminder.
Cherished comrades:
I would just like to remind everyone that the deadline for submitting pictures to the photograph competition is Tuesday, 4 March at midnight, GMT.
Eh Oops, Its Global Warming!
Postscript to the bloody Canadians.
24 hours after Sochi was done and dusted, that is this morning, the CBC announced on the radio that Canada was second in the Olympics.
On checking the medal table they were 4th overall and 3rd in the gold medals. The USA were 2nd overall. Needless to say the Americans were not mentioned.
Sorry, but they are a pack of delusionally strange people who tell bare faced lies.
This is absolutely typical of them.

Reverting to type.
As many of my ex work colleagues will testify, I was always a Unix/Linux man. However, I came to accept that, after six previous attempts, Microsoft finally got it right with Windows 7, a useful and usable operating system
However, having had to replace my venerable Windows 7 laptop as it became more and more geriatric, I have acquired a Sony VAIO as a replacement. This is a fine bit of hardware, but the software is Windows 8. What a pile of doo-doo. Talk about dumbing down, it is pathetic. I am very tempted to junk the Windows altogether and install Linux Mint or similar on it (or junk my old laptop altogether and install its copy of Windows 7 on my new laptop)

Flowering now…..
Give me Liberty………
Yes, I know, it’s all about ships again. Liberty ships in this case. Last year I had a little field trip across the bay to Baltimore to see the USS John W. Brown, one of the last two surviving Liberty Ships in operation. She was built in Baltimore in 1942 and has been part of the city landscape for the last ten years or so. She is fully operational and certified for public use and steams up and down the east coast during the summer months. Here she is out chugging on the Chesapeake Bay.

St George’s Park
These are the gates that I’ll be walking through tomorrow morning at 10 am, (1st ball 10.30, that’s 08.30gmt.)
I’m in the Long Room, tomorrow and over in the Duckpond Pavilion for the other days but more on that later. Continue reading “St George’s Park”
