Alles ist nicht in Ordnung

How could VW engineers ever imagine they could hoodwink the American market with fake emissions results?

If ever there was an example of the mighty falling, this is it! VW Group ads here recently have even managed to underline their leadership with ‘Germans do not make jokes’ – a tag-line that I suspect is now verboten.

The auto industry worldwide struggles with recalls but this is surely the biggest b*ll*ck ever dropped. Quite a feat for a firm to lose market value worth $20 bn – or twice the total value of the French rival Peugeot!

Ziz is ze Wnterhorn of our discontent, nicht Wahr? Hehehehe

Entente cordiale?

Help me out here.

Thousands of ‘migrants’ are congregating around ugly Calais, apparently destitute but equipped with wire-cutters and determined to get into the Tunnel to Blighty.

OK so far?

Why? What’s wrong with Spain, Italy, France (etcetera ad nausem) where they entered the fabled EU?

Send answers please to a jobsworth in Brussels who will reply after les vacances, peut-etre.

The Wattage Two Day Cure for all Ailments

It’s true, doesn’t matter if it is lumbago, rheumatism, arthritis, sciatica or a bout of the gout this is guaranteed to cure the lot in two days.

Firewood, cut it, split it, stack it on the woodpile.

firsts

There are three trees worth here, a Hickory, an Oak and a Maple, all hardwoods, probably totaling about three cords when cut and stacked, seasoned it should weigh about six tons, wet as it is it probably weighs twice that. The big stuff with the dark heartwood is the hickory. Bitternut is the variety that grows around here and it is very heavy wood, and one of the best in terms of heat content for firewood.

Results of Second Photography Competition

What an amazingly varied and inventive collection of entries from you all!

Wonderful interpretations of the “Transport” theme: bridges, bicycles, trams, narrow boats, taxis, wheel barrows, pony trailers, shanks’s pony, and snail caravans.

Thank you all for your entries, but it did make the job of judging rather difficult.

2nd Photography Competition 2014

The theme for this competition is Transport, which you may interpret as imaginatively as you see fit: trains and boats and planes, etc., and even ponies – see my illustration below!

Please post your entries in this thread by midnight on the 31st March. No limits on the number of entries per person, and I am happy to have a go at sorting out any HTML failures, and there are admins who can help too.

One tip you may find useful: I used to post my photos on one of my own threads to see if it worked. You can always delete them.

Looking forward to your entries. 🙂

Rural Humour

Living in the wilderness has some compensations. True we have no services that those in urban settings take for granted, trash collection, cable TV, municipal water or sewer systems to name a few.  But we do have “Honey Wagons”, these are driven by the folks who empty septic tanks every few years, not the world’s most desirable occupation but improved by a sense of Humour.

Give me Liberty………

Yes, I know, it’s all about ships again.  Liberty ships in this case.  Last year I had a little field trip across the bay to Baltimore to see the USS John W. Brown, one of the last two surviving Liberty Ships in operation.  She was built in Baltimore in 1942 and has been part of the city landscape for the last ten years or so.  She is fully operational and certified for public use and steams up and down the east coast during the summer months.  Here she is out chugging on the Chesapeake Bay.
