Dewani extradition update

Dewani High Court appeal (18 December 2011) update here

Anni Dewani – 12 months on update here (13 November 2011)

Update here (10 August 2011) … Judge rule for extradition

In my post of May 4 I wrote “The extradition hearing has now been postponed to July 18 awaiting a psychiatric report, that’s OK by me, we’ll wait.”

Well, we’ve waited, hopefully tomorrow we will finally get an answer as to whether he’s nuts or going to be returning to Cape Town (which is a really nice place to visit in the spring, as some here will attest.)

It’s not just me eagerly awaiting the outcome of the court’s decision, Anni’s Mother, Father and 8 other relatives are flying into London to hear the outcome.

Speaking from his home in Sweden, Mr Hindocha  (Anni’s Father) said Continue reading “Dewani extradition update”

Flash mob – Port Elizabeth

Ja well, this is credited to the NMMU (Nelson Mandela Metro University, most here call it the No More Money University, but when I knew it it was simply U.P.E.  University of Port Elizabeth)

This flash mob video is so cool because I go to this centre once a week, and the African harmonies at the beginning are typical of what I hear regularly.

I enjoyed it and thought that I’d share

How not to unload a container

Click pic for larger view

I couldn’t believe my eyes this afternoon, there I was, driving down a rather busy main road in one of our industrial areas and saw this, a perfect example of how not to unload a container.

Had to do a u-turn and get a side on image for my fellow cherished colleagues.. Continue reading “How not to unload a container”

Coal fired power stations

Greenpeace at it again

My lunchtime news reported yesterday that Greenpeace Africa dumped 5 tons of coal at the headquarters of our electricity supply generator ESKOM.

They were protesting against the construction of (reportedly) two of the worlds largest coal fired power plants, the Medupi power station (4800mw on line from 2012) and the Kusile power station (also 4800mw on line from 2014) and six new nuclear reactors.

That’s a lot of megawatts.

My first thought was who’s going to clean this mess up, perhaps the residents from one of the local unelectrified squatter camps could do with some free fuel on these cold Highveld winter nights.

Secondly, Continue reading “Coal fired power stations”

Can you scan a banknote?

No problems here

The Daily Telegraph says it can’t be done! (Why can’t I scan a banknote?)

The article tells us that the banknotes include secret patterns of dots which when identified by copying equipment somehow initiate a built in ‘anti forgery application’ and prevents us from doing so.

As you can see, I had no problem, perhaps because I have a (very) old HP 1210 ‘all in one’. Don’t know why it says all in one, it can print, copy and scan but can’t fax! I would have thought an ‘all in one’ would ‘do-it-all.’

So, my question is are the DT telling porkies? Can you copy / scan a bank note?

Does your printer / scanner give you an error message?

After my little experiment I find the whole thing hard to believe, what do you think?

SA ‘regrets’ Libya’s UN vote

"Did somebody say cheeseburgers? I'll take 5."

Some here may recall that when our bloke voted at the United Nations I suggested that I was convinced that he thought it was an order for lunch and had no idea what the whole brouhaha was about, guess what…

Photo cropping – 11th photo comp.

Ara’s requirements for the latest photo comp are I think not a simple close up cropped from an existing picture but perhaps something cropped from the picture which has nothing to do with the subject and changes the whole context of the photo (and in my case is actually quite funny!)

I could of course be wrong 😉

E.G.

Have you read the signage?

This bakkie wasn’t supposed to be in my shot at all, here’s what I was trying to get Continue reading “Photo cropping – 11th photo comp.”

Grannies 1 – Thugs 0

Heard this on my lunchtime news yesterday, really made my day, thought that I’d share… enjoy 🙂

My front page today

From today’s E.P Herald

AN elderly St Francis Bay woman  shot and killed one of two intruders in her home early yesterday after they broke into her house and held her hostage. Police said the 72-year-old was assaulted and robbed at about 3am by the men, who were armed with a screwdriver and knife.

The attackers gained entry by breaking a window and opening  a sliding door.

Warrant Officer Marianette Olivier said the woman had heard a noise inside the house just before the men stormed her bedroom and attacked her.

“They confronted her, tied her hands behind her back and blindfolded her, demanding bank cards and pin numbers,” Olivier said. “One of the robbers allegedly took her Mercedes-Benz and drove to a nearby ATM, where he withdrew an undisclosed amount of money.

“While he was drawing the money, his accomplice remained behind in the house.”

The nearest ATM is at a local shopping centre about 2km from her home. During the time that the robber was at the ATM,  the woman managed to untie herself when the other attacker left the room.  In a panic, she grabbed her 38 special revolver. Continue reading “Grannies 1 – Thugs 0”

The drought is over

As I drove along the highway to East London today I heard the news that the Kouga dam was overflowing! I was going to type “you have no idea what this means to us ‘ but of course most here do.

It is the largest of the dams supplying this region, when full, as now it is 35 km long!

2 of our other dams are overflowing and the other two must be close to overflowing by now.

So, my question is, why hasn’t our municipality made a statement about this, this is the best news that we’ve had in perhaps 2 years and nothing from them.

Is it because it happened on a weekend?

Is it perhaps because despite prior warnings our council has been shown to be completely inadequate in times of flood disaster management.

OR

Is it because they can no longer charge ratepayers a penalty for exceeding limits now that water is in plentiful supply?
