Spoonerism, anyone?

The only examples we see tend to be vulgar or worse. The Rev himself however is quoted as uttering amusing confusions which did not depend on smut.

So do you know any new ones?

Coincidentally I saw  a real, live footie player today who rejoices in the name of Connor Wickham. So? you ask. Well, when spoonerised he is (yes) Wonnor Cickham! How appropriate, eh? OR he’s a NY chef with limited skills: Cinnor Wockham. Sorry.

So now it’s your turn. People are the best subjects. Laters…..

Much Ado About Really Very Little.

Hark, social media explodes in angry rupture! A three-judge panel has ruled that the Delightful Mrs May cannot trigger Article 50 of the Treaty of Lisbon without consulting Parliament first. This is it for Brexit, then. The vote might as well never have taken place. The British Government has clearly plotted with EU-phile judges to prevent the United Kingdom leaving the European Union. Or has it? Having read the decision, I found nothing at all preventing Article 50 from being triggered. In fact, the decision explicitly stated that the invocation of the dreaded Article 50 in itself is not the question being considered. Rather, that the Government cannot use the Crown Prerogative to invoke it. Continue reading “Much Ado About Really Very Little.”

The Danes have a word for it

The meeja are going on about it, hygge*, one of the year’s top ten words allegedly.

It’s funny how a common idea can become news. In this case the idea is already global. It’s what the British pub offers,  it’s what elderly denizens of Mediterranean villages enjoy at the taverna, it’s a family barbie in Oz. So why all the fuss this year? It can only be because some ‘opinion leaders’ have discovered a word to encapsulate the thought!

*So the Danes get credit for a Norwegian word pronounced hoo-guh.  But we’ll all stick to our own ways of doing it.

What happened to the Telegraph?

The front page is a copy from 31st March this year!  To my knowledge it has now been there for 13 hours since last night!

They must know, so probably been hacked and they can’t move it, reckon it is an inside job of a disgruntled employee.  It is so nice to see the old format and names rather than a horde of useless bints of 20 something snowflakes.

Don’t mention the war

poppy-armband-facebook

Life is complicated. Fact. And FIFA, the international footie org, is having to unravel a little local difficulty. Understandably perhaps, they outlaw the wearing of poppies for international matches, despite the fact that ‘respect’ is universally sported as a badge by all players. The ban avoids any cry of foul.

But what about when England and Scotland play each other? Who could be offended then by the odd poppy on a black armband? We’ll have to wait for the final ruling but I expect FIFA to say no.

Pearls and Divas

I have recently started to listen to the late, great Birgit Nilsson, världens bästa Nilsson. She was a most interesting woman. She did not have her debut until she was 28 and like Pavarotti hers was an entirely natural talent, a brilliant voice that needed little guidance or re-shaping. Unusually for a prima donna of global renown she was not a diva. Rather, Continue reading “Pearls and Divas”

Changes

Recently many Europeans living in the United Kingdom have complained about a change in how they are treated and how comfortable they feel living there. Most complaints have been of the abstract sort. There are few, very few, direct instances of hostilities shown – merely a perceived difference. This leads me to believe that it’s a matter of perception, not an actual change and that that perception is rooted not in reality, but in a challenge to supposition pre-disposed. The runway

We’re all seasoned travellers here, so we are qualified to tell the gubmint which new runway to approve. There are no hubs which really offer an enhanced experience (!) – at least that I know of – so the decision for me comes down to ease of access to/from London for the common customer. LHR or LGW?

Easy. By car, bus, train or taxi LHR is quicker, cheaper and far less frustrating. I’m sure you all agree ?

Airmiles is at it again

It’s been a while since I reported on the royals. Probably because Kate can do no wrong and Wills is doing his best, bless him.

But sources tell me that the PoW is side-lining his rapacious brother whose strings are obviously still being jerked by the inimitable Fergie. Andy’s been whining about his daughters’ having to work for living – which they seem do do but rather spasmodically – arguing that the Heir’s lads are fully subsidised royals. With his nose well and truly out of joint, Andy asked HM the Queen to intercede on his behalf – and got what can only be described as the bum’s rush from the Palace too.

Come on girls! Use your natural talents, tap into Daddy’s well-oiled connections, marry well – and Chuck’s your uncle!
