Keeping a Diary

When I retired two and a half years ago, I began writing my diary each day.

Having recently read these words of the poet, William Allingham, I am wondering whether there is any truth in them, and maybe it is time for a change.

“A man who keeps a diary pays, Due toll to many tedious days; But life becomes eventful – then, His busy hand forgets the pen. Most books, indeed, are records less Of fulness than of emptiness.”

Do you keep a diary?

Postscript to the bloody Canadians.

24 hours after Sochi was done and dusted, that is this morning, the CBC announced on the radio that Canada was second in the Olympics.

On checking the medal table they were 4th overall and 3rd in the gold medals.  The USA were 2nd overall.  Needless to say the Americans were not mentioned.

Sorry, but they are a pack of delusionally strange people who tell bare faced lies.

This is absolutely typical of them.

    RUS 13 11 9 33
2   NOR 11 5 10 26
3   CAN 10 10 5 25
4   USA 9 7 12 28
5   NED 8 7 9 24

Reverting to type.

As many of my ex work colleagues will testify, I was always a Unix/Linux man. However, I came to accept that, after six previous attempts, Microsoft finally got it right with Windows 7, a useful and usable operating system

However, having had to replace my venerable Windows 7 laptop as it became more and more geriatric, I have acquired a Sony VAIO as a replacement. This is a fine bit of hardware, but the software is Windows 8. What a pile of doo-doo. Talk about dumbing down, it is pathetic. I am very tempted to junk the Windows altogether and install Linux Mint or similar on it (or junk my old laptop altogether and install its copy of Windows 7 on my new laptop)

A Valentine wedding

A gay one.

This picture adorns perhaps half of the front page today of my daily read.

The two chaps in picture were married yesterday in a beach ceremony followed by a reception at a popular beach resort.

Having read through the usual ‘happy day’ quotes along with a few other details of the day the final paragraphs made me sit up..

“Our new surname will be Smith van der Berg, because we wanted to combine the two family bloodlines.

“Why should either of our surnames be lost?” Smith said.

And what are they most looking forward to as a married couple? “Starting a family. “We are past the party stage and seriously looking forward to starting a family.

“We have started with our practice child Alfred [the dog], who was our ring-bearer at the wedding,” they said.

(I’ve changed the surnames out of respect for their privacy)

A coup, per chance?

I decided on my way back from work today to launch a coup. No, not a coup d’état or even a chicken coup. This is a photo contest coup. As our cherished lupine colleague is otherwise pre-occupied for all the best reasons, I have gathered some Dutch courage and propose serving as a judge for a photo contest.

The revolutionary photo contest committee has elected to propose a topic of aesthetically pleasing buildings. Large or small, old or new — so long as the photographer finds the building attractive, it counts. The deadline is 4 March at midnight, GMT.

Oh god, Not Again.

Oh God, one more time the news and TV stations busy obsessing with sport.  We have only just had the end of the bloody Seahawks and the Superbowl carry on round here and now it has headed straight into the bloody Olympics.

I have to say I regard Russia with an unfavourable basilisk eye on the subject of poisoning my favourite four legged people and leaving them to die in the streets of Sochi.  I fail to understand why they had to pick on dogs to exterminate when they had two groups far more deserving to pick on for immolation.  They could have got the LBGT contingent or the revolting ragheads and done the world a favour!  Or me at least!  I might have even watched if Chechnya had been nuked!  Short of that, nothing on earth would get me to tune into ABC the next three weeks!

I strenuously object to the waste of money, corruption, venality and general greed of the whole shebang.  I suggest the money would have been far better spent ensuring contraception in the third world that is so keen to send us their excess populations!

Frankly if this is the best that humanity can do the sooner we get wiped out the better!  I do not see giant cockroaches or whatever inherits the earth as a bunch to waste their substance on such stupidity.  I bet they would build their flood defences first!

Needless to say I do not patronise any of the advertisers at such happenings and events.  The one thing any of us can do is to refuse to buy their products in protest. the lot of them disgust me (and spousal unit)  Sometimes I actually know why we married each other!!

Rain rain go to Spain

We are lucky in comparison with so many other places in the UK, in that we don’t have flooding just where I live. But the fields and woods are saturated and squelchy underfoot.
Without much enthusiasm this morning, before the next forecast rain due in about 11 am, I pulled on my walking boots and wrapped a scarf around my neck.

I didn’t have to go far before I stuffed my gloves into the pockets of my jacket, and pulled out the camera

??????????The old man’s beard is so noticeable at this time of the year catching whatever light there is, and shining against the drab hedgerows even on a dull day. Continue reading “Rain rain go to Spain”
