S.A v Aus, Newlands, Cape Town

Picturesque Newlands

Probably one of the prettiest cricket grounds in the world. Pictured above is where I often sat, round about square leg under the shade of the trees, with the Kelvin Grove end bar within easy walking distance. Continue reading “S.A v Aus, Newlands, Cape Town”

Springbok 7s kit 2011/12

Unbelievable

My ghast was completely flabbered when I saw this over the weekend. (hat tip Furry)

On the left is the new Springbok 7s (nicknamed The Blitzbokke) training kit provided by the kit sponsors Canterbury and I assume approved by our lot in charge.

It looks like something one might find in the bdsm section of a sex shop, I’m assured that it’s no prank but the genuine kit our team will be wearing during the upcoming 7s series (and is set to debut at the Gold Coast Sevens in Australia at the end of the month.)

One news report (the reader’s comments are hilarious) has the following tweets –

“Are the @blitzbokke sponsored by a brand of adult nappies this season?”

and

“The Blitzbokke were accused of trying to give Superman a run for his money.”

My local daily has a poll on what we think of the kit . Continue reading “Springbok 7s kit 2011/12”

Match fixing sentences

It all seems a bit harsh to me.

They already have career destroying bans from the ICC but imprisonment!

Agent Mazhar Majeed was jailed for two years and eight months for his role in the fixing.

Pakistan Test cricket captain Salman Butt jailed for 30 months.

Former world number two Test bowler Mohammad Asif  jailed for one year for his involvement.

Mohammed Amir sentenced to 6 months in prison.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not going soft, in fact I’d lock up the agent and throw away the key, and Salmaan Butt, well he can sit, he should have known better and it appears that it was he who recruited the other two.

I remember the Hanse Cronje scandal, he was quite rightly banned for life, but the guys that he involved, where are they now? Well two of them have just finished playing in the Champions League Trophy in India (of all places).

Sure, the culprits have to be punished, but jail?

Not for me, not today.

The long unwinding road

Here’s a pic I took when driving through the Northern Cape and Free state. This particular stretch is part of the Hopetown (where diamonds were first discovered) and Hanover ‘short cut.’ Perhaps a distance of 160 mile or so.

The road goes through the Afrikaaner self proclaimed ‘independent’ Orania region (which would you believe has it’s own currency and flag amongst other things) and a very pretty part of the world it is too!

But not everything in The Free state is flat as the next pic will prove… Continue reading “The long unwinding road”

Heya, na na na

Purdey

So there I was watching the television over the weekend and a promo comes on for Joanne Lumley and her trip down the Nile.

Looks like it could be a good series (okay, I know that most here have probably seen it already but we haven’t)

Back to the promo, in the background I hear one of my favourite tunes of all time, so I start googling to find the artist and hear a bit more than the BBC aired.

Couldn’t find it, it’s not on the DVD credits nor the BBC Knowledge website, I asked Mrs. Soutie just now, she says “oh ja, Heya na na na”

We found it and wanted to share…

Here’s the full version without the humanoids Continue reading “Heya, na na na”

Haircuts

Coiffures

Did you know that if you google ‘haircut’ the first page is taken up almost completely with financial gobbledygook with hardly a coiffered head in sight?

I want to tell you about my neighbour’s plan, he’s a modest working chap, married with 3 children (although I think that 3 is one too many) lives in a modest home and employs 3 staff (a gardener / handyman, a maid and a nanny)

His wife works part time at our local medical centre and he’s employed by one of the motor manufacturers in the city.

Well, sad to say, he’s fallen on hard times lately, his employers are working short time (and have been for the last 18 months or so) which has resulted in him getting behind on his mortgage payments and forced him to increase his overdraft facility and credit card usage. He tells me that life has become untenable. Continue reading “Haircuts”

RWC – finals weekend

Eden Park

The finals weekend is upon us.

Lots of ups and downs, The Boks were dismissed early, The Irish looked as though they could go all the way, The English, well what can one add about the English, crucified by their press for perhaps not much more than most of us have done on tour.

The Argies were magnificent and fought above their weight once again and Scotland, well what can one say, I blame the bagpipe ban!

So, onto the bronze medal match tomorrow and then the final on Sunday….

Australia 21 – Wales 22

New Zealand 29 – France 9

Theses aren’t my predictions but would you believe Continue reading “RWC – finals weekend”
