Considering that it is entirely Anglo-American based, I was rather chuffed with myself only getting 5 wrong in the Grants Whisky history test.

Ashes squad

I see that the “England” have announced their squad for the upcoming tour down under, new caps include a New Zealander, a Zimbabwean and a Northern Irishman.

What’s happened? Have they run out of South Africans?

The plastic bag debate

Come on England GET WITH THE PROGRAMME!!!

I simply can’t believe that recent press articles indicate that England (and the English?) still have a prehistoric attitude to the use and free issue of plastic bags.

We’ve been charged for them by our shopowners for years now, and yes, I originally thought it a cheek and another “stealth” or “green” tax but it isn’t!

The nominal charge ( ± 2p here, which apparently goes to plastic recycling initiatives) is enough to make most averse and resentful to buying them, so we take our own!

And what an improvement to the environment, almost overnight the unsightly discarded plastic bags disappeared from our roads, parks, neighbourhoods and of course the countryside.

Of course we haven’t totally eliminated our reliance on them, I actually had to buy one yesterday ((Grrrr!!!) My carboot supply had been exhausted without my knowledge)

The exodus of Southern Kings players continues. There can be but a handful of our Super Rugby squad announced in January still plying their trade here in the Eastern Province. The latest? Cornell du Preez.

“Watson (Kings president) confirmed yesterday that Cornell du Preez had also been released from his contract with immediate effect, to sign with Edinburgh Rugby in Scotland.

Watson said he was excited that Du Preez had been given the opportunity to further his rugby career.

“There is no doubt that Cornell was one of the stalwarts during the Southern Kings campaign and he has continued to play superb rugby for us during the Currie Cup First Division. We wish him everything of the best.”

Watson said he knew Du Preez aspired to build towards playing for Scotland, and did not feel he would be given the opportunity to play for the Springboks, because of the depth of loose forwards, if he remained in South Africa.”
