Nando’s, Mugabe & the Chinese take-away

Sipu recently published the latest ad from Nando’s titled “Last Dictator standing” lampooning bob mugabe, if you missed it or haven’t seen it yet here it is , go and have a look, it will help you make sense of this, Wigget’s latest cartoon published today in my local weekend read.

Sipu also posted a comment linking to a Business Day report which stated that Nando’s had been pressured into withdrawing the ad, well they didn’t, I’m pleased to report that I saw it flighted again today, I’ve now probably seen it perhaps 10 times since its launch on Thursday.

Funny enough, all the ads that I’ve seen have had the Chairman Mao (Karaoke bar) scene omitted, perhaps Nando’s Beijing shareholders hold more sway than                                                those up in Harare 😉

Update (Sunday 04Dec. ( pm))

Nando’s have pulled the ad, press release published in my Sunday Times here 😦

Oh! The cartoon, on the next page…

COP17 – Durban

Durban

Nestling on the shores of the Indian Ocean, Durban is the holiday place of choice for probably more South Africans than anywhere else. It’s subtropical climate and warm waters almost guaranteeing a holiday free from the vagaries of the weather.

Durban is a relatively short 4 hour drive from Johannesburg with multi-lane highways and dual carriageways the whole way, making it relatively close and convenient.

Which suits me, Continue reading “COP17 – Durban”

S.A. v Aus, The Wanderers, Jhb

This was my preferred position when watching cricket at The Wanderers, the stand wouldn’t have been so high back in those days and the seats (well, we didn’t have seats but rows and rows of wooden railway sleeper benches, complete with splinters) wouldn’t have been as comfortable,

The Wanderers, affectionately known as The Bullring, prior to the construction of the new stands it actually resembled a bullring, is the venue for today’s test match.

And am I looking forward to it. Continue reading “S.A. v Aus, The Wanderers, Jhb”

Anni Dewani – 12 months on

A poignant reminder

The remnants of a bouquet of roses marks the spot where Anni Dewani’s body was found, a heartbreaking reminder of those oh so tragic events of 12 months ago today, in Gugulethu, Cape Town.

During the intervening year the taxi driver has been sentenced to 18 years in jail, a further two accomplices (the trigger men) are awaiting trial and the alleged mastermind (Anni’s husband Shrien Dewani) is appealing against a successful extradition order which the S.A. prosecution service hope will see him returned to Cape Town.

Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

Brunfelsia pauciflora

They’re lovely, aren’t they, I have perhaps 5 or 6 bushes in my garden and they flower all year round.

It’s not just the beauty of the colours in their floral display that attracts me (and mine flower for the full 12 months of the year) but the scent.

I have them in my driveway, no matter what time of year nor what time of night, as I get out of my car I have this wonderful smell of the plants reminding me that I’m home!

But this isn’t a gardening post, oh no, I need a bit of help. Continue reading “Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow”
