Black Mamba

Black Mamba

Imagine my surprise when this morning, watching De’Anthony Thomas, the Oregon Ducks running back, score a record breaking 91yd touchdown I heard the ESPN commentator refer to him as the ‘black’ something or other!

What? With the Luis Suarez controversy still front page news in the UK press and a police criminal investigation ongoing into John Terry’s use of the word black (followed by an expletive) I was somewhat taken aback.

I simply had to investigate further.

It appears that during his time at Crenshaw High School, he was given the nickname “Black Mamba” by Snoop Dogg and also played in his football league, The SYFL (Snoop Youth Football League.)

So that’s all right then.

245 Not Out

Wordpress notification

Hard to believe that this is my 245th post here on The Chariot, must be, WordPress kept encouraging me to reach the land mark and what better day to write a non-post then today, probably our quietest day of the year.

Presents opened this morning, I didn’t get a snowplough, I want one next year, First Mate at the Creek got one, I think it’s a cool gift. I bet none of my neighbours have one!

We had our Christmas meal in the afternoon, what do you call that? I know that a mid-morning meal is called brunch (being a cross between breakfast and lunch) but what about mid-afternoon, luper? (Lunch and supper.) I prefer it with one ‘p’ sounds more like super which it was.

245 not out, sounds like a cricket blog doesn’t it? Well it isn’t, it’s actually about nothing, just my late afternoon thoughts, it could be about cricket though. Two tests starting tomorrow. First the Aussies at 01:30 my time (23:30 gmt today) followed almost immediately by The Proteas at 10:00 my time (08:00gmt.)

The Aussies at the MCG are fielding an eleven with more new caps (well at least one) against the mighty Indians who surprisingly are only no.2 in the test rankings behind England. (Actually now that I think about it I’m not surprised at all.) Continue reading “245 Not Out”

Dewani appeal

Tragic scene

Dewani is appealing Judge Howard Riddle’s ruling of August this year which granted the South African judiciary’s request for him to be extradited to Cape Town to face charges relating to the November 2010 murder of his wife Anni in Gugulethu, Cape Town.

Judge Riddle’s decision required final approval from the British Home Office, Theresa May the British Home Secretary duly authorised the extradition order during September.

Dewani appealed.

The appeal started at the London High Court on Tuesday, 13th December.

Clare Montgomery (Dewani’s QC) argued that Dewani suffering from depression and post-traumatic stress disorder “is too ill to be extradited.” Continue reading “Dewani appeal”

Sevens rugby, 2011 – P.E.

My programme

Never in my wildest dreams did I envisage watching international rugby right here in the Eastern Cape in the middle of December.

This week was historically reserved for the first of our summer holiday cricket tests, always played at St. George’s Park and always well attended. That was until the thieving, fraudsters who now run S.A. cricket sold out to bigger unions. ‘Our’ test is now going to be played up in Pretoria, most Pretoria residents are now on holiday and probably at the coast enjoying the sunshine and beaches or off at a game park, there will be nobody at Centurion but when has common sense ever prevailed over administrators lining their pockets?

Back to the rugby.

The 2 day event is billed as ‘Rugby’s biggest party’ take my word for it, it is!

What a day, what an event, rugby like you’ve never seen, non stop action, 21 games yesterday, starting at 11:15am finishing with the final just after 8pm.

Party, party, party, music, music, music, dancing girls, the most amazing camaraderie that I’ve witnessed both in the stands and on the field, ever.

It all took place at our brand new (okay, it’s 18 months old now) stadium built for the FIFA 2010 world cup, The Nelson Mandela Bay stadium.

Below is a pictorial of my day (yes ladies, it’s not all about rugby but the day, feel free to have a look :))

My Ponytail

Imagine my surprise when my Ponytail plant suddenly sprouted what appears to be a flower more than half of its existing height.

I bought the plant probably 6 or 7 years ago, the various websites that I’ve visited to find out a bit more info on it tell me that it’s a very slow grower, they are dead right, if my plant has grown more than 10 cm in all the time that I’ve had it I’d be surprised.

For the record, the plant now stands approx. 70cm high, (excluding the new ‘growth’) the flowery stalky bit which has suddenly shot up overnight is more than half of that, I measure it at 37cm from the ‘crown.’

The plant (Beaucarnea recurvata) is apparently native to Mexico, stores water in its stem and can go for years without or with very little water. Perhaps our recent 3 year drought and my positioning of it in full sun for all of its life have encouraged it to do what comes naturally to most other plants in my garden (that is flower.)

I’ve included a picture of the complete plant on the next page…
