Kings billboard

I frequently drive past this billboard, it always brings a smile.

By way of explanation, three of our domestic rivals are the Natal Sharks, Free State Cheetahs and Northern Transvaal Bulls 🙂

My Southern Kings played their final 2013 super rugby match yesterday and yes, you’ve guessed it, lost. But winning was not the purpose of our foray into super rugby this year.

Walk

England v Australia, First Test, Trent Bridge, day 3.

The Great RonnieO, master of the game of snooker, always held his hand up when he made an infringement on the cue ball. My tip caressed the white as I was lining up the shot, he would admit. Sadly, not all sportsmen are sportsmen. I am referring to the nasty/clever ( delete where applicable) machinations of one Stuart Broad.

As an England cricket fan, not born and bred more along the lines of nurture, I am appalled by his actions. I’ve never taken to Broad. At the end of the Test I wonder if he’ll look back on his batting figures with pride. Continue reading “Walk”

Ladies

She’s the most unlikely athlete to look at. None of the usual wasp waist and slender limb. But she oozes determination with her shadow-shots – all double-handed and as ungainly as her play. But she wins – and might just spring a surprise today. And then she’ll do this again, I’m sure. Wimbledon, 2 pm BST.

France's Marion Bartoli overpowered Belgian Kirsten Flipkens 6-1, 6-2 to reach her second Wimbledon final. She faces Germany's Sabine Lisicki in the final.

Bus stuck at finish of stage one

Yer gorra laff! Just picture it: a hundred and fifty lads on bikes going like the clappers for 120 miles on Corsica. Then minutes from the finish somebody jams a team-bus on the line. Panic ensues. The finish will now be 300 metres before the line; half the riders get the message and start sprinting; lots of them fall off their bikes; the bus is extracted and the finish line reinstated.

Guess who’s been using up all those illicit drugs since the big clean-up .

Cherished colleagues are known to deplore the cult of celebrity, particularly when good runners, singers, toadies and assorted prats are awarded Honours for our pains. But soft! What light at yonder window (etc.)? Allegedly it’s all in the genes – the latest and greatest excuse for almost anything you deplore.

So see http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-23046602  – wherein the evolutionary tale is told.

In the dark ages social status was determined by skill at hunting, shooting and fishing, which explains why the great and good anno 2013 still set store by such qualities.

Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose – again!
