Ticking off

Update:

The “Swimathon” swimming training for Marie Curie Nursing is coming along.

Visit the site:

I have been doing 50 lengths at a time for training sessions. My husband lent me his wrist stop watch but that was hopeless as without my glasses I couldn’t see the figures, but I’m doing 50 lengths in about 26-7 minutes at the moment. It’s only a couple of weeks to go now.

5 years and counting

I first decided I wanted to come to China when we studied Chinese history at O level.  Everyone else did the traditional WW2 gig, for some reason our teacher decided on an alternative path.  We hurtled through the dynasties, paused for breath at the Boxer rebellion and rolled on to Mao Zedong (or Mao Tse-Tung before he changed his name) and Jiong Jieshi (the politician formerly known as Chiang KaiShek) before grinding to an abrupt halt at 2nd December 1949. It was if nothing of interest happened after that as far as the Oxford Examination Board was concerned.  We still had time left so we padded out our knowledge with British parliamentary reform in the 20th century.  I think our class must have had the most warped perspective of any examination candidates that year.

Dum, da-dum, da dum dum dumdum, dumdum….

A friend of mine has just started ballet lessons. She’s pirouetting and pas-de-deuxing like crazy and developing the firm, lithe legs of her youth – which isn’t that far back.

She’s signed up for a second course of lessons. What makes it really worthwhile now, she says, is that the other women in the class have loosened up and are friendlier and up for a quiet giggle.

“In the beginning, they were so serious. I was embarrassed to be the only one to find it funny when I went wrong,”she said.

A healthy attitude. Going wrong is what we all do when we fling ourselves headlong into the uncharted territory of Expression Through Dance and laughing is so much more becoming than puffy-faced snivelly-nosed misery. Continue reading “Dum, da-dum, da dum dum dumdum, dumdum….”

For Janh

I opened google today, and saw the link. I don’t know if you are already aware or it’s of use. Just thought of you:

(it has a bicycling option [see the drop dpwn menu below the a, b points])

Blissy biking.

Knee injuries make you feel really old.   I mean really old; Igor-loping, arthriticky, limpingly, grotesquely old.

Dodgy knees don’t like stairs. You pause and think “oh drat” before going up and you come down in the ungainly fashion of a unidexter.

Knee problems are a timely reminder to have patience with people who are a bit slow on stairs and to be considerate at all times to those folk whose entire existence is ruled by degrees of impaired mobility.

Part of the knee recovery plan has been to use the turbo-trainer to keep the muscles in shape.  It’s in the dining room overlooking the garden. Two hours before people turn up to dinner I get asked “Will you get that bike out into the garage?” and I’m afraid I always refuse because a) it’s a nice bike (elegant Simoncini frame with Shimano Ultegra gears) and b) because the garage is not a good place for a nice bike being so crowded with stuff and c) it’s a fag getting it to the garage and bringing it back again five hours later.

Anyway, the turbo-trainer deserves house room. I’ve kept faith with it through this injury and the frequent winter days when I deem it not safe to mix it with ice or traffic. Continue reading “Blissy biking.”

Ball by ball – S.A. vs India

I heard yesterday that our ball by ball commentary is also an unrestricted world wide feed via the internet. I often listen via my computer, seems only fair to allow the rest of the household access to the TV.

I would be interested if fellow members would quickly open the SABC portal and let me know if the broadcast is indeed available in your country.

All in a good cause, continued…

Well last week’s plans to swim twice to kick start the training for Swimathon, (http://www.swimathon.org/index.php ) were only half fulfilled. An ill child, a cat with an unexpected fit and sheer exhaustion were the excuses. I hope to do the 100 length challenge in April and have not swum very much over the last year.

An ill child, a cat with an unexpected fit and sheer exhaustion were the excuses. I hope to do the 100 length challenge in April and have not swum very much over the last year.

But now the child is better, the cat released from the vet and I’ve had a lie in this morning, so those excuses are no longer valid …. Continue reading “All in a good cause, continued…”

FIFA 2010 – 2 million tickets sold

There are approximately 3million tickets on offer for this years Football World Cup to be held in South Africa during June and July.

Having already sold two thirds of them must surely be a feather in the cap for the organisers. I of course have applied for 14 of them
