Unexpected visitor

Unexpected visitor

The Sinfonia was in town yesterday. It is most unusual for cruise liners to berth here in The Eastern Cape, most cruise operators take their guests to Cape Town and the more tropical Durban, I’d be surprised if we have more than a handful of visits each calendar year. This visit has a sad if somewhat humorous story to it. Continue reading “Unexpected visitor”

Democratic Alliance Students Organisation – poster

Driving home this evening an hour on our national broadcaster (SAFM) was dedicated to the controversy that this poster has created.

My wife and I are both members of the D.A. (Democratic Alliance.) I of course had no idea what the controversy was about but had to see what had caused all the fuss.

Does this offend you?

So, I’ll ask the question again, does this offend you?

Elephants in trouble – Kruger National Park

Last week saw some pretty serious rain and flooding up in the Northeast of the country. Sunday Times reports here (Flood victims help each other) and here (Six killed in Mpumalanga floods.)

While reading about the tragedy online this series of 3 short videos caught my attention, I thought that I’d share…

Tubby

South Africa has a competitor at The Winter Youth Olympics currently on the go in Innsbruck. Surprised? Me too!

16 year old Sive Speelman, an  ‘Alpine skier’ is participating in 4 events.

The athlete is currently there with his coach.

In addition to the coach, Sascoc have sent a 4 person support team, which includes Sascoc CEO Tubby Reddy, all flying business class (the athlete and coach flew economy) and no doubt staying in fancy hotels, using chauffeur driven vehicles and all the other essentials of an arduous ‘working trip.’

Not bad work if you can get it.

American Black

Trevor & JayTrevor Noah appeared on the NBC hit ‘Tonight show with Jay Lenno’ this past weekend. He’s the first South African comedian to guest on the show and by all accounts was very well received.

His 6 minute routine was littered with racial overtones for which he’s received a fair bit of criticism, lines such as ‘America has the credit rating of a black man’ and his poking fun of the ‘Afro’ part of the ‘Afro-American’ term just 2 examples.

He then exaggerates life and difficulties as a coloured person during his younger years, most if not all the laws and practices which he refers to were abolished long before he was born, but the American audience lapped it up and gave him a standing ovation.

I can only find the first 3 minutes of his routine for you, the full 6 minutes is available on the NBC tonight show page here.

Aussie tourist’s bungee cord snaps

I couldn’t believe my eyes this morning when I watched this clip on SKY news. For those who haven’t witnessed it here’s the video.

The young Australian woman survived the fall, got to the river’s side, was treated by paramedics and airlifted to a hospital here in South Africa.

The news clip that I watched included perhaps a 30 second interview with her, so matter of fact, (remember her feet were still tied together when she entered the water!) so brave a truly remarkable young women.
