Happy Birthday Soutie!

Killer Whales, Dolphins, Sardines and Algoa Bay – The video
This magnificent picture of a family of Orcas graced the front page of my morning newspaper today, Orcas (Killer Whales) spotted in Algoa Bay this past weekend, a rare occurrence indeed. Well that’s what I thought, they apparently arrive here every year at about this time for a month or so, we’ve always considered it a rare occurrence because they haven’t been pictured more than a couple of times previously but with more and more people enjoying the bay and camera technology improving I have a feeling that we’ll be having more and more sightings along with the proof.

Every year at about this time we have a sardine run, massive shoals of sardines move up our east coast towards Mozambique and bring with them their predators, the big game fish, dolphins and occasionally Orcas!
A team from Pro-Dive were in the bay this weekend and filmed not only the feeding frenzy that accompanies the sardine run but an Orca actually attacking (and I presume killing) a dolphin, here’s the video… Continue reading “Killer Whales, Dolphins, Sardines and Algoa Bay – The video”
Help, please.
The Green thing (this is so true)
In the queue at the supermarket, the cashier told the older woman that she should
bring her own shopping bag because plastic bags weren’t good for the environment.
The woman apologized to him and explained,
“We didn’t have the green thing back in my day.”
The clerk responded, “That’s our problem today.
The former generation did not care enough to save our environment, they were useless at recycling”
He was right, that generation didn’t have the green thing in its day.
Back then, they returned their milk bottles,
pop bottles and beer bottles to the shop.
The shop sent them back to the plant to be washed
and sterilized and refilled,
so it could use the same bottles over and over.
So they really were recycled. (And you got money back on returned bottles) Continue reading “The Green thing (this is so true)”
Vive La Difference!
Christopher – I saw this and thought of you – interestingly I think you understand the British/Aussie humour rather well! It made me chuckle and thought the chariot would enjoy it too
Linky thing from the BBC today discussing the differences between the English and German use of language – Apparently the Germans don’t have a word for ‘small talk’! Crikey!
😀
Sepp Blatter’s folly

During the last week of last year’s FIFA world cup four huge advertising signboards suddenly appeared on the main thoroughfares of Port Elizabeth advertising the ‘upcoming FIFA World Cup’ and welcoming visitors to our shores! (Really huge, this road is 4 lanes wide and had a sign on each side!) Continue reading “Sepp Blatter’s folly”
Beauty Before Age
When OZ announced his competition for this month,

I realised that there was only one photograph that I wanted to enter. It would take time but I vowed that I would do my best
Unfortunately, I live in a country where we never quite know what the weather will do next and I only had the weekends. I knew that I could set off from Embra on a glorious and sunny day only to arrive at my destination, less than 70 miles away, in a howling gale with torrential rain and zero visibility. It’s what we Jocks have to endure and it goes a long way to explain our cheery view of life. Continue reading “Beauty Before Age”
Rollin’ rollin’ rollin’, keep those cheeses rolling…
It wasn’t supposed to take place at all this year but the great Brockworth tradition of rolling a cheese down a 1 in 2 hill and then running after it, survives.
It survives the massive over-hyping of it and the visiting crowds from all over the country and abroad that caused such chaos in 2009 that it’s whole existence was called into question. Continue reading “Rollin’ rollin’ rollin’, keep those cheeses rolling…”
What a day out, but where were we?
We started off in the Kent countryside (your clue) saw a man fishing through the trees then a serpent coming out of the trees. We visited Australia and saw Ayres Rock, Africa, South America, North America (note the natives) Spotted a health and safety cactus (see the corks) and then we cae across Zeus with Europa on his back (Zeus is the white bull).
So where were we
