Afcon ticket office

I’ve mentioned elsewhere that on Monday 28 January we are going to watch the mighty Niger against the Black Stars in the Orange Afcon 2013.

We’re avid sports fans, I’m one of the few people who can attest to watching World Cup Rugby, World Cup Cricket and World Cup Football all right here in my home city and now we’re privileged to host the Africa Cup of Nations, we just had to go.

I was tasked with buying the tickets, 8 of them!

I consider myself an experienced ticket buyer, in the last year I’ve arranged tickets for numerous E.P.Kings rugby matches, the Springboks / England test match, HSBC sevens, the Proteas v Black Caps T20 on Boxing day and of course more recently the Proteas v New Zealand 5 day test held right here at St. Georges Park.

Where to buy Afcon tickets? It was not as simple as you might think.

None of the usual suspects were selling tickets for the Afcon games!

A phone call to the offices of E.P rugby quickly solved my problem, “there’s a kiosk at the Prince Alfred Road gate” she said, no problem and off I headed.

I got to the aforementioned gate at The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium (the home of the mighty Southern Kings and graveyard of bulls and sharks) and nothing! Locked. I saw a security guard in the distance and beckoned her over, she directed me down the road to the ‘kiosk’

You’re not going to believe this….

Just pride

Sometimes I’ll go a-musing
Seeking Æther’s inspiration
On paths not of my choosing
To an unknown destination.

But ‘Pride’? Some lions, a hero,
Or an anagram of di’per?
And Prejudice? (Don’t jeer, O
Muse! You know I get quite hyper.)

So back to sleep, still musing
On my quest to find a vision;
Too proud to dream of losing!
And too old to get religion.

The Great Backyard Bird Count for 2013

Yes, it is a real event, the 2013 count is coming up beginning on February 15th and this year it is open to submissions world-wide.  Sponsored by the Audubon Society and others it is a snapshot record of birds sighted on one weekend, individual counts are submitted on line and are totaled by species and number.  Last year there were over 100,000 submissions counting over 17 million birds

There is also a photo competition associated with the event.  Now I am no expert at photography, I do have a decent camera and occasionally pull of a decent image but some of the photos in this contest are truly superb.  This little gem was the overall winner, I just wish I could get pictures like that.

You can find the rest of the finalist photos here:

They are well worth a look and maybe while you are there you can download the entrance form and do your very own backyard count on  February 15th

If I might

It’s offally risky talking politics here but I for one was pleased to see David Cameron’s bid to loosen the Eurocuffs which are dragging the members towards a state of bondage. Even more pleased that Angela Merkel wrong-footed Francoise Hollande by recognising that not every EU member wants totalitarian Eurocracy and will talk about the implications. Meanwhile don’t I hear many millions of Europeans shouting, “Yes! At last somebody is standing up and challenging the system.”?

Back at home, Labour doesn’t know what to say, except to reject the promised referendum or perhaps not. In fact Cameron’s tactics will be hard for Labour to oppose since they involve negotiating a ‘looser’ membership deal and asking the voters “Yes or No? In or Out”. They can’t oppose renegotiation because they know the strength of public feeling but equally they can’t jump on board. The Milimess will continue. But luckily even they won’t be proposing the Chinese model for the future!

French leave – again

Complaining of gross injustice at home, the gross Gerard Depardieu left for Moscow – a Napoleonic choice, I fear. We’ll see (as my 6-year-old granddaughter is wont to observe). But soft, what other luminary at yonder port of entry breaks cover? It is not Rosy-fingered Dawn but Carla and Nicolulla with a couple of sons, migrating to London – allegedly. Now I can see why Carla might fancy it – some of her ‘best friends’ are natives – but will the little fella really let a high tax-rate drive him out of (one of) his ancestral home(s)? I can only applaud his good taste if he does.
