Regular?

No not your bodily functions?
It’s no secret here that if you are looking for me I’ll be at my regular Coffee Shop for an hour every day sometime between 10:00am and 1:00pm.
It’s my hour off! I have my usual table, peace and quiet, a snack and attempt the DT crossword. (Yesterday when I walked in a young couple moved from ‘my’ table, unnecessary but nice, of course I thanked them!)
Suppliers and customers use it as a drop off point for mail, printing, pamphlets, stock items etc.
It’s my meeting place of choice, be it business or private if you need me you know where I am.
Imagine my surprise when Continue reading “Regular?”

A cobweb for Val

I’ve been meaning to post a picture of my car’s cobweb laden mirror for some time now, Val’s picture post  on flowers titled ‘Find the cobweb’ (or similar) and her more recent ‘mirror image’ effort made me finally do something about it!

A little history to begin with, spiders for some reason or another have always held a high position in the hierarchy of the Soutie household, (possibly one tier lower than the cat, but as the cat’s position is self proclaimed rather than bestowed perhaps that doesn’t count!), they are obviously eating something and that has to be good for my environment,  I’ve never killed them.

You would be hard pressed to find Continue reading “A cobweb for Val”

What next?

Well then, what’s going to happen to the magnificent stadiums now that the world cup is finished?

Ours has been designated the home of Eastern Province Rugby! We had our first home game last Friday and although the crowd was disappointing (FIFA hangover perhaps) it is the start of something big.

Our stadium during the final phase of construction

But there’s more,  last week it was announced that the Super14 is to be expanded to a Super16 format and that our Province is a shoe in for the 16th place. Oh, to be able to watch The Crusaders,  Reds, Chiefs, Bulls, Brumbies et al performing here in my home town. Continue reading “What next?”

Handicap Parking

I would think that we all have relatives or friends who use handicap parking bays.

It has long been a bugbear of mine when I see able bodied people parking in such designated bays, I politely tell them to move, unlike you lot we don’t have wheel clamping here so the best that we can hope for is an eagle-eyed traffic official perhaps passing by to stop and issue a fine. Unfortunately the chances of that happening are remote, our traffic cops are usually on lunch or manning a speed trap when you really need them.

(Perhaps I’m being a bit unfair, they are probably understaffed, under funded and under resourced, I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt.)

A quiet word from me, a threat to report them to the management of whatever facility we are in normally works, if they have children in the car so much the better their embarrassment normally jolts their brains into gear “Oh, thank you. I didn’t see the sign” they mutter and move on.

I saw this sign recently outside a local pub and thought that I’d share Continue reading “Handicap Parking”

Lucky boy (cont.)

What a day.

What great organization, 5 star treatment from the moment that I arrived ’till the moment that I left.

I was asked earlier what whisky was being served, well I don’t drink the stuff but the whisky on offer in our suite was something called ‘J & B Jet’

Fortunately for me, when I mentioned my dilemma to one of the staff a bottle of brandy magically appeared, that’s more my style, a couple of beers (Bud, it’s awful but I forced a couple down (didn’t want to offend my hosts 😉 )) followed by a few brandy and cokes during the match. I hear some of you laughing at the stereotype (beer and brandy& coke), well, leopards don’t change their spots even in FIFA suites!

I had a great time, I’ve had a great month of it actually, South Africa returns to normal tomorrow, no hangover, no regrets and loads of happy memories, FIFA’s advertising blurb is absolutely spot on, ‘Once in a lifetime.’ Continue reading “Lucky boy (cont.)”
