New Year Resolutions

Does anyone make New Year resolutions any more that don’t involve going to the gym/losing weight? (yawns, puts feet up with latest Byatt, chooses another morsel from the Hotel Chocolate box while kitten settles on lap against warm laptop).

The newspapers are full of dieting and getting fit plans but they are the hackneyed way to fill features pages at this time of year. Continue reading “New Year Resolutions”

Let your fires be bright

Picture the old crooner Bing, sitting a wing-backed armchair, wearing his navy-blue dressing gown with red piping over stripy pyjamas and comfy tweed slippers. He’s looking tenderly at a a roaring log fire, hearth festooned with sparkly red bows and seasonal greenery – holly, sprouts, mistletoe and vine (German version) when he bursts into song…

“Have yourself a flaming little Christmas… Continue reading “Let your fires be bright”

Anyone for a mince pie?

I don’t have a Christmas card for any of you but do help yourself to a mince pie.  There’s Courvoisier cream or a dab of brandy butter to go with, if you like.

Merry Christmas to all the Charioteers and thanks for the laughs and the interesting views and debate over the year.

Sorry I haven’t had time to read more and make a bigger contribution over the last month or two but time has been in short supply.  Must try harder in New Year!

Best wishes for a happy and peaceful Christmas, however you choose to spend it. 😀

Child Support Forms

Just sharing something received from a friend….

The following are all replies that Manchester women have written on Child Support Agency Forms in the section for listing “father’s details;” or putting it another way…. Who’s your Daddy?

These are genuine excerpts from the forms and exhibit sometimes startling sincerity. 🙂 Continue reading “Child Support Forms”

Feeling Christmassy now

So, I’m feeling a lot more Christmassy now. This is about right less than two weeks before. I’m counting the days. It’s going to be a traditional family Christmas, maybe the last one for a while where we can all get together on the day.

The festive feelings all started with an office Christmas bash. Continue reading “Feeling Christmassy now”

Nov Short Story – the Mystery of the Unknown Soldier

If he could tell that the young girl with the fat baby in the blue snowsuit wasn’t interested, it didn’t matter. Not that day, not any day really.

Bert was an effusive sort of chap; never used three words where thirty would do. And they all came rushing out which tended to exhaust his listeners to the point where they would look at their watches and remember a pie overcooking in the oven or an appointment at the dentist.

Tracy was taking her children to her mums on the other side of town so she could go to a sunbed appointment and have a bit of peace. She deserved it, she thought – and so did her mum, knowing how hard life was as a single mum, especially since her Tracy was only 17. And so this is..er..NOT Christmas!

If you are full of the joys of the forthcoming Christmas season;  if you have just finished wrapping the last on your list of Christmas gifts and fixing home-made little Hobbycraft holly leaves and berries to it;  if you have all your Christmas cards written and in a wobbly pile on the sideboard waiting to be posted, please don’t read on. You won’t like it. You really won’t. Continue reading “And so this is..er..NOT Christmas!”

Mozart’s Requiem

When you haven’t been to a live public performance of classical music in a while, it’s tempting to do nothing but sit listening to your CDs in the deep solitary comfort of the sofa at home.

You might imagine that it’s enough; that it’s not necessary to make the effort to buy tickets, to travel to sit in an auditorium for a couple of hours and then spend another hour driving home.

It’s only when you do make the effort that you appreciate what you’re missing. Continue reading “Mozart’s Requiem”

What makes Britain really great

There was a sort of a review of someone’s new book in one of the papers recently.

Sorry. I know that sounds like “Vaguest News” but this week’s gone by in a flash and I only remember the general thrust of the piece which is “What Makes Britain Really Great?” (I’ve since found it was the Indie and it’s here)

There were some odd things and some expected things like the Tunnock’s Tea Cake and the wholly unjustified Bacardi Breezer representing alcopops – alcopops being one of those things that contributes hugely to Britain not being as great any more. Continue reading “What makes Britain really great”
