January 14th – a brief nature report, for near Oxford, UK

Today when I opened the curtains at about 8:45, I was greeted with white scenery. A hoar frost had covered everything and as the sun came up it made a wonderful sight. Soft yellowed light, long shadows. But no photos. I hadn’t had my first cup of tea.

Later, after Scout’s Judo run and a little light shopping we came back at about mid-day to find the little garden in our communal driveway still in shade and therefore still frosted.

By my front door the bowl planted with various bulbs ready for Spring, was also pretty frosted… including the tulip leaves which have been above ground now since before Christmas

In the front garden there are many signs of Spring. The cyclamen in flower under the viburnum, the hellebores and the magnolia buds, to name a few.

This afternoon I sat in a cafe window while waiting for Techie, trying to write a difficult card and the sun streamed in on me, soothing and calming.

The frost didn’t lift all day in shaded areas, but the air had a wonderful freshness.

No time to lose. No, time to lose. Make time to stand and stare.... Did you see that?

  1. Super photos, Pseu. As you say the air had a wonderful freshness and clarity when we went for a walk, the path changing from frozen to muddy in shade and sun. The sheep and horses we passed were grazing happily and frozen ground hadn’t deterred the moles.

  2. You are a very talented photographer, Pseu, please keep the pictures coming.
I always enjoy looking at them. The weather in California has been bizarre. It’s been months
since it’s either rained or snowed and the air quality is a disaster. Flying back into San Francisco
was eerie. The sky had a strange orange glow.

  3. Very cold and a hard frost last night, but today was lovely.I prefer this sort of weather, I dislike the grey, dismal days of winter.

Looking at the garden, I still have flowering things from last year, but you are right, everything is budding. It’ll end in tears.

    Lovely photos,. 🙂

  4. The forecast is for more, so I hear… another cold night tonight.

I have a hollyhock which is still green from last year and not all of the trees have lost all their leaves this winter. It is strange.
    Glad you like the photos.

  5. Janus, all the rosemary… two lots in my garden and the one you see here survived last winter which was pretty hard, being under snow for several weeks…
I lost all the top growth on the viburnums though and had to cut hard back – and the bay tree suffered big losses too.
