Latest from Iran

There were cause for double celebrations in the Islamic republic of Iran last month. The Iranian Presidential election was won by the moderate Hassan Rouhani. Campaigning on limited government and equal rights for women it was a shock result. The wider world awaits in expectation that Rouhani delivers on another promise that he can settle longstanding questions about Iran’s nuclear program. Let’s hope there will be a new era of peace. Narrows Lock to Chaffey’s Lock – July 24

Left our wall after the crowd departed, a little rain yesterday but a good sunset.

Our fourth of fifth day without cellphone or internet access, blissfully quiet.

Our last up lock we are now at the high point of the Rideau, now all the navigation marks reverse  Green marks now are to be left to ones right (OK?)

Here’s one that some wag has helpfully augmented,  “The channel goes down there?”

Smiths Falls to Narrows Lock

As promised we were first lock this morning at 9:00 am

A half  mile later we had to wait for a lift bridge and lock (Smiths Falls detached) the hold up was a northbound cruise ship (if it could be so called)  a barge with a fold up bow (blue part) in order to fit the locks – the tour is Kingston –Ottawa in three days.

On the move – or not

As my occasional reader knows, Backside is a stickler for good form. ‘Good’, meaning less irritating than people usually are. So when it comes to walking around public places, he’s lined up a few of his grumpiest gripes.

1. Have you noticed the door-stops? They stop to scratch themselves (or wha’evah) plumb in the entrance to a shop, an escalator or a bus, thus preventing all mobile users of the facility?

2. What about the broad-sides? They walk confidently along, happy with the delusion that they are not wider in girth than normal folk and can easily get through the available gap in the crowd.

3. And the ubiquitous pram brigade? They congregate in garrulous groups with the obvious objective of filling the pavement completely and endangering the lives the rest of us.

Don’t you just love people too? Do tell.

Burrit’s Rapids to Merrickville – July 19

Off our wall at 10:30 am, allowed time for the lock to clear.  Spotted this unusual sight yesterday, couple of folk practicing their polo shots in rural Ontario,

Moved a big 6 miles today but had to run 7 locks and 3 bridges.

Kings v Lions

My programme

It would appear that my days of watching live Super Rugby are over 😦

Let me explain.

There are 6 major playing regions here in South Africa but only 5 places available in the Super Rugby competition (in it’s current format.) I’ve explained previously that for as long as there has been Super Rugby my little part of the world has been completely ignored, that was until this year.

Be it politics, compassion or just plain old common sense our rugby hierarchy decided to to give us a chance and entered Eastern Province (under The Southern Kings franchise) in this years competition, at the expense of last year’s lowest ranked S.A. team ( The Lions) with the proviso that the Kings  play the Lions in a home and away relegation / promotion series of matches come the end of the season.

Well, the first of these relegation / promotion matches was played last night, right here at our magnificent new FIFA world cup stadium, and yes, you’ve guessed it, the Kings lost.

Had the Kings won, we had plans for the 2,000km round trip up to Johannesburg to watch the 2nd leg, but we agreed at the end of last night’s game not waste our time, effort and money! Continue reading “Kings v Lions”
