Cold Comfort

I’m not entirely sure if I should indentify with Flora or Aunt Ada Doom these last few days.

No time for the computer, much too sedentary an occupation for the mini ice-age which descended unexpectedly just before the weekend.

Major central heating failure; so the best hope for survival was Movement! Dashing about, cleaning, journeys in the car; almost anything but sitting still at my desk.

I did feel just a little isolated but the house looks much cleaner. Oddly, I now cannot settle, and it feels treacherously decadent to wake up to a warm house. Perhaps we are really rather spoilt.

Gloomy days

It’s so dull and drippy here that when I tried more photos for the ‘Can you guess what is it yet? part II’  I failed miserably to get any decent shots. When doing the close-ups I find natural light works best… the flash at such close range just whites everything out.

So here is the tree we can see from our back garden…

taken in colour, believe it or not. Continue reading “Gloomy days”

Pier elegance

If you’re not familiar with the West Country, there are two seaside resorts of note on the English side of the Bristol Channel; Weston-super-Mare and Clevedon.

If Weston is the noisy lively teenager, all arcades-kiss-me-quick-candyfloss-and-donkey rides on the sand, Clevedon, the seaside town just to the north, is it’s restrained decorous maiden aunt. Continue reading “Pier elegance”

Lessons of history!

“The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt. People must again, learn to work, instead of living on public assistance.”

Goodnight everyone, sleep well.

Cicero – 55 BC

Some equal rights are more equal than others.

Oh, this is a right pain in the bum! After several incidents in which Christians who ran beds and breakfasts were told that they had no right to control who frequented their establishments; to be more precise: even if they only wanted married, heterosexual couples to sleep in their houses their desires were “bigoted” and “illegal”, there is no concern are self-pity because “gay hotels” are now being investigated for discriminating against heterosexual couples. It is also not a stretch to imagine that there will have to be investigations about the rights of women to stay at any establishment they choose are being infringed upon! Is one to infer from this that some rights are more equal than others?

Right, then. I need to hope that no one in San Francisco reads this as I would become an object of ridicule.
