…until the Photo Comp for August is judged. Just had this one from Janus.
Update: Turns out Janus did not take the picture. None the less, it is a good picture. Never mind. It would be good if a few more pictures were entered by Judgement Day!

I put this in a comment in the August Poetry Competition, but no one seems to have noticed it. Not that I am egotistical or anything, but I hope it might encourage some others to have a go!
Summertime
Summertime, the time for clouds,
Summertime, the time for crowds,
This means it’s time to reach
A tiny area of the beach.
Manky deck chairs squash your thumbs,
Solid benches numb your bums
The rain falls relentlessly
To bugger the al fresco tea!
Yellow sand just all around
It’s dodgy to sit on the ground
The sand finds each nook and cranny
Especially those of dear old Granny.
The wind blows almost everywhere
Causes the ancient windbreak to tear.
To inflate the lilo is just enough
To make you run out of puff.
Now the floods begin to flow
It really is just time to go
Now the bit to break your heart,
The bloody car won’t start!
A pessimist, moi? 🙂
Yesterday, England mangled the Aussie batting and won the Ashes for the third time in a row. Much has been said about how much England should gloat. the PC brigade think it is not a good thing to relish victory.
If the boot had been on the other foot, you can imagine how the Aussie press would have reacted, bleating on about softie whingeing Poms!
So, as the famous line from the St Trinian’s school song goes,
“Trample on the weak and revel in their plight!”
In a few years time, if the ICC have not completely killed off Test Cricket with their rules and regulations by then, the boot might well be on the other foot, with the English taking a walloping. So, sons and daughters of St George, make hay while the sun shines, for it will not shine forever 🙂
….. come on, chaps and chapesses. The photo comp has been running for a while now and there has only been one entry, from Soutie. This is definitely a contender but I would hate it to win by a walkover, so get photographing those Weird Lighting Effects.
August 31st is the deadline.
…….and quite clever, too!! 🙂
When I get old and grey(well, even older and greyer), I want one of these:
After my minor triumph in the last photo comp, it falls upon me to set the subject for the next one.

Herbs and spices
For Father’s Day, I got a book
Hello, says I, that’s worth a look
But it seemed to promise lots of labour
A barbecue cook book by Weber.
In it one hundred lovely recipes
For incinerating meat and veggies
Ways of cooking piggies and birds
Not for anyone but for nerds.
In order to flavour these comestibles
I would have to raid the wife’s vestibules.
Loads of rosemary and thyme
And other herbs that just won’t rhyme.
Then, of course, there are the spices
Many of these can lead to vices
Many used in a marinade
The results washed down with lemonade
Or, preferably, a nice Chilean Carmenére

This shows how tranquil our road is, after the gas company dug a large number of huge holes all the way down the road to replace the gas main, then left them there for a long time without any action taking place. Since the road is difficult to navigate with all the holes there, there is far less traffic, so it is very tranquil indeed! Me, grumpy? Nah!!
….. in Pennsylvania in the 150th anniversary year of the Battle Of Gettysburg.
You would go on a tour of the battlefield. This the view from Little Round Top, the statue being of General Warren who first realised the strategic importance of the steep hill. Seeing the distances involved, and the famous landmarks of the battle; Cemetery Hill, Little Round Top, Seminary Ridge, etc. really brings home to you the enormity of the battle.
