It must have been 1986 or 7, I had a corner 10th floor office at the intersection of Eloff street and Commissioner, central Jhb, a great view of the mayhem going on below me.
To cut a long story short, the SA riot police strolled in and commandeered my desk, sort of used my office as a command center. Me being a country boy asked if I could stay and watch proceedings, no problem they said, just as well ’cause I didn’t fancy driving home through the mob which was assembling.
Must have been 10,000 in the street, a line of cops at one end suddenly ran and baton charged the demonstrators, the mob evaporated into thin air!
‘Oh good’ I said ‘I’ll be off home now.’
‘No. no’ said the CO ‘Wait a minute’
Sure enough, the mob regathered, the CO was on my phone issuing orders and suddenly a line of vehicles sporting water cannons arrived and opened up on the throng. they immediately dispersed.
‘Great, I’ll be off now then’ I said.
‘Hold on’ said the CO.
Once again the crowd reassembled, thousands of them, the CO was back on my phone barking orders, out of nowhere a whole bunch of SA police arrived with dogs, they ran straight into the rioters and dispersed them in double quick time.
I just stood there.
‘Okay’ the CO said ‘you can go home now’
I didn’t believe him, I waited.
‘Are you sure?’ I asked
‘Oh ja, they never come back after we set the dogs on them’ he said
‘So why don’t you use the dogs to begin with’ I questioned
‘Ah’ he answered ‘we have to wash and tenderize them before the dogs get interested’

I heard earlier of an interview with a shop owner in Pekham (I think) whose shop was invaded and ransacked, all the Sky guy asked was ‘were they after the goods or the cash register’ how on earth has it come to this?
It wouldn’t happen here, perhaps one afternoon of it but then, we would protect ourselves and wait for the army. and the army would be deployed here, they did it about 4 years ago and I’m happy to think that they’d deploy them again tomorrow.

Good story there, Soutie. The helicopter film taken over the streets of Peckham has been unbelieveable this evening. A store shows signs of fire. It continues to burn, the street deserted, no fire engines in sight, it becomes an inferno, like a classic fire brigade instruction film showing how it engulfs the building from fron to back and the fire spreads to the Greggs on one side and another building on the other.
About half an hour before a fire engine even arrives in the street?? What? No-one thinks there might be elderly or disabled people living above those shops in that street? No-one around to even find out if anyone’s at risk? Where IS everyone?

CO, as a renowned historian you know that the non-indigenous workers arrived after WWII, invited to get industry back on its feet. That didn’t affect the rural Welsh so much, I suppose, although the valleys were soon alive with the sound of unfamiliar ethnic music.
I have never quite understood the logic of that move, if indeed it is true. Who remembers the £10 Poms? Why were hundreds of thousands of British people encouraged to emigrate after the war? If there was plenty of work around why did the Government send indigenous people away and import foreigners?
As for it not being true, I think that liberal rose tinted glasses have probably rewritten the facts. Everybody quotes the case of Windrush which brought the first West Indian immigrants in 1948. I cannot claim to have the facts, but I found this little piece in Wikipedia quite revealing.
