  1. What a beautiful city Moscow is, the more pictures you show the more impressed I am.
They obviously do not have the insane desire to keep replacing buildings with modern architectural excrescences. Equally they were to be burnt down at a time when architecture was rather beautiful so the post Napoleonic rebuild would have been elegant. I just love that School of Artillery.

  2. Yes, apart from a few odd survivors, the oldest buildings in Moscow are from what we know as the Georgian period. Thereare, of course, ‘excrescences. I was going to take some shots around a Metro station at a busy intersection this afternoon. Pretty awful looking area where roads were just driven through without any thought of the effects on the urban environment – usual socialist style – but, as today is Easter Sunday and everywhere is pretty crowded, the police and the internal security police are out in force, particularly, of course, around the Metro stations and other public transport hubs. The Metro staion I wanted to shoot is one of the smaller ones, a picture of faded elegance surrounded by run-down tat, but not a good idea with the security forces around. Trust me on this, you do not want to spend even the shortest amount of time in the custody of the Russian police 🙂

  3. bravo, something in common with America then?
No one would want to spend a minute in the ‘tank’ in the Deep South either!
And nowadays in WA, a notoriously liberal state they just shoot people out of hand in Seattle/Tacoma. It has become quite shocking. There has been a spate of police assassinations and the police are replying in kind in spades!
There seems to be a serious police on black/hispanic, (but mainly black) disproportional reaction. Typical of the PC lot here, all the excuses in the world until the corpses start piling up and then all hell breaks out. People taking potshots at each other in the streets down there, getting as bad as Dallas!

Sorry I digress, no, I wouldn’t want to take pictures in front of Russian fuzz either!

  4. A fascinating glimpse, thanks Bravo. I never imagined the Russians were admirers of Classic Greek Doric columns. Reminds me of Bayshill Road Cheltenham and some of the Ladies College buildings!

The Cathedral looks impressive. Do you have any interior pics?

  5. Thanks again for these photos. It’s not just the architecture that’s fascinating, it’s the colours. Were the buildings kept in such a wonderful condition during the communist period?

  6. Jaime – the reason I ask is that I went to Prague, which has similar beautifully coloured buildings. I saw photos of Prague during the Communist era in one of the museums there and the buildings were in the most appalling state. I just wondered whether Moscow had been brightened up in the same way as Prague had obviously been.

  7. Boa, Jaime, the buildings have all been renovated. You are right, Boq, they were not kept in anything like this condition during the communist times – apart from the flagship buidings. I’ll post some shots of what they were like then, probably next weekend – there are some buildings in the ‘hood still undergoing renovation.
