First Try (Copy & Paste)

This video shows the winner of “Ukraine’s Got Talent”,  Kseniya Simonova, 24, drawing a series of pictures on an illuminated sand table showing how ordinary people were affected by the German invasion during World War II. Her talent, which admittedly is a strange one, is mesmeric to watch.

The images, projected onto a large screen, moved many in the audience to tears and she won the top prize of about £75,000.

She begins by creating a scene showing a couple sitting holding hands on a bench under a starry sky, but then warplanes appear and the happy scene is obliterated.

It is replaced by a woman’s face crying, but then a baby arrives and the woman smiles again. Once again war returns and Miss Simonova throws the sand into chaos from which a young woman’s face appears.

She quickly becomes an old widow, her face wrinkled and sad, before the image turns into a monument to an Unknown Soldier.

This outdoor scene becomes framed by a window as if the viewer is looking out on the monument from within a house.

In the final scene, a mother and child appear inside and a man standing outside, with his hands pressed against the glass, saying goodbye.

The Great Patriotic War, as it is called in Ukraine, resulted in one in four of the population being killed with eight to 11 million deaths out of a population of 42 million..

  1. Nice One Shermeen,

I saw this about 6 months ago when a friend sent it in an e-mail. That is one talented young woman. Not just with the sand art but in such an emotive choice of subject matter.

As an aside, did you know that in your WordPress dashboard profile, you can change your nickname for display?

  2. Yes I agree Shermeen.

I remember this on MyT, two members couldn’t understand why the audience were in tears !!!

    It is indeed very moving.

  3. It is quite good, is it not Ferret. Someone sent to me in the email today, so I decided to test my understanding of this site by posting it. The fact that I succeeded in posting a blog as well as a video means Bearsy has done a great job in explaining matters here.

Thanks, I have now changed my name 🙂

  4. Hello Katie. I knew it would be a well-viewed piece but did not know it had been posted on My T.
By the way, that is a rather fetching pic 🙂

  5. Shermeen,

Things around here are a lot more stable and easier to achieve than MyT that much is for sure. Bearsy is good at working stuff out and the others are always experimenting with new stuff and letting us know how to do some nifty tricks.

Not a day goes by without some boffin inventing a new addition to the FAQs page. Its a brave new world and no mistake. 8)

Congratulations on your set of firsts by the way, I had a first of my own by being the first to comment on your first blog. I must approach Bearsy for my medal. 🙂

  6. Welcome, Shermeen. I’d never seen this before. What a truly remarkable talent that young artist has and thank you for highlighting it!

  7. Salaam Levent. No, the explanation/narrative is not by me 🙂 ad yes, it does help. As the title of my blog suggests it is copied and pasted from an email I received along with the clip.
I was quite uncertain whether I would be able to post the blog at all, hence I called it a ‘Try’.

Glad to have changed my screen name too. When you helpfully suggested it to me earlier, I was a little too unsure of managing myself on this site, but honestly, it is very user-friendly.

    Thank you Oz.

Need some advice here. I think I read it here that you have been saving your My T blogs on site. (I hope this is correct, if not, apologies). Well, the way people are being deleted on My T, one’s number could be up any time. Although my (comparatively) few blogs on there are not masterpieces, I do not wish to lose them. So, emulating you I have saved them on However, these are saved as mere links. Should My T decide that I am next to be culled I will lose them all. Is there any way I can avoid this?

  10. Evening Shermeen: firstly, a VERY competent attempt for your first post here. Secondly, oh, I am one of the blogger referred to by Katie in her comment. So, could I just say, that I too, am grateful for the very good explanation of the point of this clip. My Russian is rubbish and I feely admit this, so when Levent first posted this on MyT some time ago, I admired the artistry, which is just amazing, but did not understand the context. Many thank, Shermeen.

  11. I hadn’t seen this, so thank you, Shermeen, for posting it here, and for the posting the explanation.

I’ve never liked TV shows like ‘XXX has got Talent’, or Stars in Their Eyes – about which I know a great deal! It seems to me that it’s a very good way for TV stations to put on programs at a minimal cost, gives people false hopes, and some of them are no better than an exercise in people-baiting. But if they bring talent like this to public notice, then I’ll have to rethink my position!

Well done for a first attempt!

  12. Araminta, re.your 8.56 pm, what comes to mind is something I have never ever used before and perhaps never will again, but somehow it seems apt to say here; ‘Araminta rules, OK’.

As for saving the blogs, yes, I am finding it out the hard way. Very boring and very tedious but it has to be copy and paste. I am not yet saving the comments, which really are the essence of blogs in my opinion.

  13. Thanks Ferret, I mistook your earlier comment to suggest 😦 – this place is much better.

Boadicea, I agree with what you say about these TV programmes. I hardly ever know about their existence but sometimes do watch the odd one.

Marinaid, it is quite something, isn’t it!
