Time and all that

As I sup my cuppa, I’m reflecting on the fact that our cherished hosts down under are already gearing up for the arrival of 2013, while our westernmost colleague has barely finished with yesterday! While, not to be outdone in this race for the future, my internet account is already showing my debits for 2nd January. But hey! that’s another year, another krone!

At this time of year, I’m always reminded of that enigmatic piece of scripture – Ecclesiastes 3 – which many like to ascribe to King Solomon, the personification of wisdom. “To every thing there is a season….” I probably like it most for its sheer poetry, but the more I read it, the less clear it becomes. It raises so many questions about the ‘right’ time for anything. So I can’t help myself (or you) with its interpretation. Except to note that ‘right’ has a moral context. Old Solomon seems to be pointing us towards just one conclusion:

“Wherefore I perceive that there is nothing better, than that a man should rejoice in his own works; for that is his portion: for who shall bring him to see what shall be after him?”

So Skål! Whatever your resolutions, good luck with them and have a happy 2013!

  1. Youth is when you’re allowed to stay up late on New Year’s Eve. Middle age is when you’re forced to. – Bill Vaughn

    Happy New Year.

  2. Old King S hadn’t foreseen our rugby board.

Nothing seasonal about rugby anymore, our Superrugby squads will be practicing and playing friendlies this month with the Internationals among them have just flown back from the end of year European tour!

The only season our Springbok players see is that sprinkled atop their steaks at a braai 😉

  3. Happy New Year.

I have always particularly hated New Year’s Eve, can’t stand the false bonhomie and disgusting slurpy kisses of revolting drunks. Can’t understand New Year’s resolutions either, never bothered with them myself
As today is bright and sunny I think we’ll go out to lunch somewhere with a view of the mountains which are delightfully bright, sunlit and incredibly white a splendid antithesis to revolting humanity. That is when I can drag spousal unit away from the Rose Parade, (bloody rubbish revisionist history theme this year, can’t watch it without losing my temper!)

  4. CO, yes. Lots of American ‘historical’ documentaries over here, Any resemblance to relaity is strictly coincidental. Sentimental, politically correct claptrap,

CO, a Good New Year to you and to spousal unit and hounds.

I knew about the Rose Bowl but had never heard of the accompanying Rose Parade.

I have just spent an enjoyable time googling it. I see that there was a nurses’ float, entitled ‘A Healing Place’, for the first time in honour of the President of the Parade who is a retired nurse. Remembering your critique of the Olympic opening ceremony and how much you enjoyed the sight of Health Professionals wasting their time with such frippery instead of caring for patients, I am sure that you really warmed to that particular float. Still, it did win the Craftsman Award for ‘Exceptional Achievement in Showmanship & Dramatic Impact for Floats > 55′ only’.

But the hot news, and I trust that JW is looking in, is that the Tournament Special prize for ‘Exceptional Merit in Multiple Classifications (Incl Floats That Do Not Retract to 55′)’ was scooped by RFD-TV for “Classic Tractor Fever’.

Here’s a link to their website, JW. It looks like it’s a must for any serious tractor lover and I hope that you enjoy it as much as I am enjoying the ‘Standpoint website’ to which you led me.
