Backside has been singing along merrily behind me, as we review the tasty fare served up by our cherished lyricists. While shepherds watched, Away in a manger, In dulci jubilo, Deck the halls, O tannenbaum and Ding dong merrily – they are all here, boasting their roasts and sprouting nicely. And what chucklesome lines to savour too!
Biltong and boerrie from the braa (Sipu) Disgusting bread sauce looks like puke (Sheona)
Silly hats and too much tinsel (Oz) Marrow, stuffed is what I crave (LW)
And what to serve with Brussel sprouts Oz) and the truly culinary Away Pret à Manger (LW)
But where to start with the judging as I sip my morning tea? Sipu is up there with his African song – and is just a sprout short of a masterpiece. Sheona delivers a memorable dirge of dining disaster, leaving Oz and LW to enjoy their little ding dong. But in the end – for his ‘Deck the plates’ and in celebration of our shared love of the old brassica, I name Oz 2012 Poet of the Season!
Thanks and congratulations to you, Oz and all the poets at https://charioteers.org/2012/12/02/yuletide-poetry-competition-19th-december-2012/!
And while we’re at it, I recall that Andrew wrote some Marvellous lines we can all sing to O tannenbaum, reminding us that Boa’s is not the only chariot on the course and that life (with a bit of luck) goes on:
But at my back I always hear
Time’s winged chariot hurrying near;
And yonder all before us lie
Deserts of vast eternity.
Season’s Greetings, everyone, from me and my crooning companion!
Aaaargh!!!!!!
I did one but ran out of time 😦
In my Sunday best
and other finery
along with all the rest
friends and family
Lunch is on it’s way
turkey breast for me
soaked in rich gravy
and loads of fresh veggie
Brussell sprouts, brussells sprouts
hide them ‘neath my meat
feel the warmth of my dog’s snout
and drop them at his feet.
Here’s my draft for your Yuletide enjoyment (and to show that I at least made an effort ;))
Soutie, it’s a winner alright! You get a hon. doctorate for that! 🙂
Thank you Janus and Backside for your generous judging, although I think “2012 Poet of the Season” might be a tad too grandiose. Can we settle for “Seasonal Poet 2012”?
I’ll have a think about the next comp while I’m peeling the sprouts. 🙂
OZ
Seasoned with some fine words maybe? 🙂
Well done OZ a worthy win. My own opinion of the little Belgian horrors remains unchanged 🙂
Thanks for your judging, Janus. (Very hard, the judging exams!)
I’m glad to see the laurels going to another sprout supporter.
Crikey, OZ, another win! Well done. 🙂
I did enjoy all the entries, Janus and well judged. I do eat sprouts but I personally don’t find them very inspiring from a poetic point of view.
And Season’s Greeting to you too, Janus.
Arrers, how’s about:
O artichoke, my artichoke! I love you more than any bloke? 🙂
Gosh, you’re a talented wolf. Congratulations. 🙂
Bilby, sweetheart. I’ve missed you! Don’t keep me bored while the NSW is on duty over the festive season.
Come to think of it, that probably wasn’t the best chat-up line in history.
Sob!
OZ
Ear droop, fur loss. Sob!
