I’ve found that it’s a mistake to watch sport on a TV channel based in the home country of one of the teams. The persistent omniscience and triumphalism/despair spoil the game completely, especially when half the experts have mysteriously metamorphosed from dirty foulers to tactical wizards .
So for the Euros I’m selecting a German station for Denmark/Holland and England/France and sticking to the Danish coverage of Sweden/Ukraine. And any non-teutonic channel will do for Germany/Portugal!
I realise that few cherished fans have such an agony of choice but that will all change when the United States of Europe control all TV programmes. Remember you read it first on the chariot!
Evenin’ Janus. I can watch on Auntie Beeb or the Portuguese equivalent RTP1 and am surprised I can still do either. Never mind the United States of Europe – worry more if Murdyeuch waves enough of his grubby dollars under the snouts of the FIFA hogs and you end up needing a Sky subscription (with the added fee for Sky Sports) to watch it at all.
OZ
Evening, Janus.
I’m in a black hole as far as television is concerned, but I’m really not complaining.
I’m not a great fan of sport of any variety, but I understand that others may feel differently.
Oh, bugger oi. The sunbed thieves have just scored.
OZ
I am in the dining room avoiding the TV
Môre Janus, have the euros started?
I have for years been a commentator disser, they detract more than they add.
I’ve said previously that the decline started with the introduction of players as commentators, give me well educated, well spoken journalists every time. I of course grew up sans TV, our only contact (other then being at the game) was the radio, they were professional journalists and did a great job.
I’ve often said here that if they gave us a channel with just the match and the crowd noise I’d be the first subscriber!
We often watch sport in local pubs, often the place will continue to play it’s music / radio / or even a band but have the TV’s on, that’s just fine by me, it’s not the ‘patriosm’ that I detest but the inane waffle.
G’morgen, Soutie! hear, hear! And yes, the hostilities have begun with the Greeks going for the prize for best dive and most convincing ‘concussion’; Oz’s mates narrowly missing out against Germany. The Russians are looking good but why are they classed as European?
Perhaps because along with the Arabs they own half of it 😕
Soutie. #5- Spot on.
The “experts” state the obvious and it is a complete clichefest. And there is no need for three ex-players to discuss the match at half and full time.
As for the €’s, ante-post I went for my usual House of Orange prediction: Holland (quiet Janus). A bad start but one game does not make a swallow.
Poor show from Ronaldo last night whereas little Leo got a hat-trick for Argentina v Brazil.
I find I can quite happily watch most sport with the sound turned off. I don’t watch football unless Scotland is playing, so these Euro games will not be followed, unless one of the sons is around. Today there is the final of the French Open between Nadal and Djokovic, at the medieval stadium of Roland Garros where they haven’t installed Hawkeye and the umpire has to climb down from the chair to inspect marks on the court in the event of a disputed line call. Then there’s the Formula 1 GP at Montreal. Who needs football? (Is this blasphemy or lèse-majesté?)
Don’t forget day 2 or 4 of the third Test, Sheona. It is each to their own at the end of the day. Unbelievably, there’s some on here that watch rugby!
I’ve got some live sport on today. My son is playing in a cup final with his football team. Kick-off 2PM. Should be finished in time for the Spain v Italy € match.
Again, TR, I only watch rugby if Scotland’s playing. I’m a bit nationalist in that respect. I hope your son’s team wins today. You can’t beat watching a live match, with no irritating commentators.
JW, good luck to your boy this afternoon. Gli azzuri for me later on. Should be a good game. Interesting to see that Gattuso wants to come back to Ibrox.
This last wicket knock from the Windies is a bit special, is it not? I think ‘we’ may to settle for a draw this time.
It was indeed, pity he didn’t get his ton, an historic innings nonetheless.
And now they walk off for bad light!
Now as you all know I’m not in Birmingham, but what is it with cricket? Why will they not start earlier, I mean 11 o’clock for pete’s sake, there’s loads of other sports which start far far earlier (golf, bowls, etc.) Perhaps the ICC bigwigs don’t want their late breakfasts after their lie in (because of the late night banquets) disturbed 😦
G’dag, Soutie. It’s yer dew, innit? 😉
Môre Janus
As I said I’m not there. I’d of thought that with the sun rising early (very early compared to our summers) the dew factor would be gone by perhaps 8/9 am, perhaps a member from the Chariot gardening club could enlighten me/us 🙂
Naeh, Soutie. As student I worked in the parks dept. where every morning the bowling greens had to be cosseted. On many summer mornings the foggy, foggy dew hangs around for hours, little affected I fear by global warming!
Oh, okay then 😦
It would of course be interesting to establish the dampness of the field at say 9:30 (or any other arbitrary time prior to the ‘official’ start) with the dampness of the field after a rain delay, is there not a handy tool for that?
I’ve seen a lot of cricket played on very wet outfields.
I understand the safety aspect of it all, I just hate the absolute disdain (contempt) that we, the ticket paying public are often treated with by the officials.
Hear, hear. Your point makes nonsense of the late start.
