The Owl and the Pussycat, Twenty Years On. (Poetry Comp.)

Bearsy set a high bar for this one, but here’s my attempt.

The Owl and the Pussycat foundered at sea
While sailing their leaky old boat
You may think it funny they sailed with no money
And neglected a suicide note
The Owl looked up from his watery ditch
And bubbled his final tirade
“O hateful Pussy, you nagging old bitch
What a miserable partner you made,
You made,
You made,
What a miserable partner you made”

Pussy yelled at the Owl “You’ve always been foul
From the moment we pledged our vow.
All the time we’ve been married, I’ve always been harried
I’m delighted you’re going down now”
They’d argued this way for most of the day
While their ship settled ever the lower
Divorce they could’ve and certainly should’ve
They gave lawyer Mackie the power,
The power,
The power,
They gave lawyer Mackie the power.

Dear Sir, we demand, in return for a grand, a release.
Said the lawyer ” I’ll bill”
And sent them away with a brief, oh! so fey
To a Jurist, who lived in Bexhill
Quoting “avoidance of doubt”, he threw the case out
Leaving both to their predestined doom.
So side by side, on the incoming tide
They drowned in the gathering gloom,
The gloom,
The gloom,
They drowned in the gathering gloom.

  1. Brilliant! I know every line of the original off by heart, having to recite it every night at moment. I will banish every thought of your post modernist revival…

  2. V. V. entertaining.
I know it by heart too one of my favourite pomes from my youf.
My sister used to recite it to me.
I do like the new version

  3. CO: Thank you. It was one of my late wife’s favorites, again from her girlhood. I always thought the original a bit “soppy”. This one’s got a little more “bite” to it.
