Over the weekend we visited Great Dixter house and gardens near Northiam, Rye Sussex. The house was built in 1457 and was recently owned by Christopher Lloyd (gardener)
The gardens were magnificent, though now at the end of the year but still worth a visit. (photos)
It made me think if only the house could talk and tell us the true stories of what occurred over the years in the building, and what if all buildings could tell us the truth about events within. History is written by the victors or the ruling classes and will always be biased to what they want to say.
So all we need is a device that can allow the house to tell us what was said inside and what really happened. What did Henry 8th really think of his wives, what did Churchill really do and so on.
What would you like to hear from the house?
Lovely house, Rick.
Yes, it would be so interesting if these old houses could tell their stories. Some of them do, of course; day to day transactions of the estate and so forth, have survived.
Minty I hear what you say but that is legal, what about the inhabitants thoughts and feelings. wouldn’t that be interesting?
Best off to consult the ghosts.
