Remarkably it’s also the anniversary of that hoax with the boy in Colorado 2 years ago!
I looked up the date 1783 according to wiki!
You’re right Soutie – what an odd coincidence 🙂
No 4. Is Marie Antoinette. I’m assuming she was sentenced to death on 15th October.
No 5. Is Napoleon in exile, St Helena.
Sorry, I’m in a rush!
#8 = Mata Hari was shot as a spy by the French in 1917
#8 = Mata Hari was shot as a spy by the French in 1917
#7 = Alfred Dreyfus arrested by the French 1894
Are you having an anti-French day, Boadicea? Let’s hope Wales can “mak siccar”!
#6 = the “From Hell” letter sent to the Whitechapel vigilance committee at the time of the Jack the Ripper murders in 1888?
Araminta and Sheona
All correct.
It is a bit over-loaded with the French – I’m seeking honorary Welsh status today!
One more.
10. Is the “Great Storm” in 1987, when we lost thousands of trees!
Sheona and Araminta
Right – at least they’re not French!
#2 Is Samuel Pepys. I had to look it up but he got married on 15th October
N#9, Johny Smith is granted government money to buy all the rubber in the world so as to finally make larger condoms to fit Aussies 🙂
Ok, I’ll shut up now 😦
Even Samuel Pepys’ wife was anglo-french, Boadicea.
FEEG
That is interesting – you almost deserve a point for that! However, having gone to a ‘real book’, ie the latest biography of Pepys, he was, as Wiki said married first on 10th October 1655 and then on 1st December at St Margaret Westminster.
The clue is the waistcoat… 🙂
Sheona
… not only was Elizabeth Pepys wife part French – she was only fourteen when she married him
Great pictures Boadicea! I’d love to know what number 1 is. Looks a bit like Notre Dame, Paris.
PG
#1 is ‘foreign’ – but not Paris! A truly significant event – and one that I am profoundly grateful for!
I’m a little wary of over-doing these quizzes – but ‘today’ had so many interesting anniversaries that I couldn’t ignore them.
Evening.
Oh, we haven’t made much progress! I think I have sorted out a couple more but I’ll pop back later. I don’t want to prevent others having a go.
#2 On the left is Samuel Pepys, on the right a waistcoat (vest to me). That much I know. Googling Pepys and waistcoat delivers this for October 1666 (no day)
“the King hath yesterday in council declared his resolution of setting a fashion for clothes which he will never alter. It will be a vest, I know not well how”.
So I guess that on this day in 1666 Sam first mentioned the garment in his diary.
LW
Correct!
Araminta
I think after this time you may as well finish it off!
Oh, OK.
No1. Siege of Vienna, Ottoman empire stopped in their tracks.
That’s it Araminta!
🙂
Good quiz. Thank you, Boadicea.
Still one to go!
Tried that one, but failed miserably. I’ll have another go.
Back soon.
Ah, was it the first birth control clinic in the US?
Or, World Assembly of Anglican Bishops decided that birth control was acceptable.
This sounds more likely.
Blimey, you have no idea what bizarre sites I have to visit in the process of solving the final question. 😦
sorry typo “had”.
Since you’re well on the track – try 1927 and Britain!
I have to admit defeat here, Boadicea.
I am reluctant to proceed further with this one without protection. 😉
Stumped.
I’ll just put the answer up … 🙂
I didn’t realise that Britain ever had a Public Morals Committee 🙂
Frankly, neither did . Obviously before my time and not mentioned much!
Agh, please correct various typos. I’ve been out for dinner and should not be in charge of a keyboard. I’m off to bed before I make any more spelling mistakes.
3) 1st balloon ascent

Thanks for another great quiz, Boadicea.
Thanks Sheona!
