My mate Gerrie had an angle grinder and extension cord stolen out the back of his bakkie (pick up truck to you) parked at one of our larger sports bars during the Springbok All Black match on Saturday the 20th August.
He told me about his loss the following Monday or Tuesday, he added that he only left the pub where he was watching at about midnight or so (celebrations here after Springbok victories are often long and hard!) I of course called him an idiot and asked him what on earth he’d expected? We do of course sympathise with our buddies when something is stolen but, hey, life goes on!
I had a lunchtime beer with Gerrie this past Wednesday, would you believe he told me that a petrol attendant (yes we still have those) from the B.P. Garage opposite the sports bar had offered the self same angle grinder to a friend of his while filling up with petrol on the forecourt! Give me the details I said, I know the owner of the garage very well and have done for over 30 years.
- Pump closest to the main road
- Blue Mitsubishi Colt bakkie with canopy
- Thursday 25th, between 9:30 and 10:30
I eventually got hold of the B.P. garage owner yesterday morning; he’s going to check his CCTV for us, we might soon be dishing out some of Ferret’s regimental justice of our own 😉
Excellent Soutie. Those CCTV cameras can be very useful. A friend of mine lent her very old and much loved 1973 Beetle to another ‘friend’ whose car was in hospital. ‘Please take care of it. It is old and fragile’. A couple of days later someone spotted the Beetle towing another car into an Engen Garage. Following the Beetle’s return, a day later, a very ominous thumping noise was heard. A visit to a mechanic diagnosed the source of the problem. He said the car must have been made to work excessively hard which had caused some bolts to sheer or brackets to fail, or some such. Gentle enquiries to ‘friend’ met with denials that she had used it for towing. A visit to the Engen Garage revealed CCTV footage of the Beetle limping in with car in tow.
Extraordinarily, once confronted with the video evidence, the soon to be ex ‘friend’ denied that she had ever said that she had not towed, despite there being sms messages as proof of the contrary. She also denied all responsibility for the damage to the Beetle. It is incredible how people can lie so blatantly and persist in it even when there is evidence to the contrary. A simple apology at the outset would have resolved the whole issue.
Not the brightest candle in the chandelier, then, our man 🙂
So, how is it going, Soutie?
Have you tracked him down?
Morning all
Quite right sipu, you’ve reminded me of a Saturday last year when a customer in a bar I frequent had a rugby jersey stolen, the owner of the pub found the incident on his CCTV, called all his regulars in and asked us to watch it, one of us happened to know the girlfriend of the chap who took it! Got it back within the hour:)
Not yet, the BP owner hasn’t got back to me, I’m sure that we will, I’ll keep you posted.
