A trip to Oz: Some contemplations

As promised, another post about Mrs FEEG’s and my trip to Oz recently. I do not intend to do too much of the travelogue thingy, but more things that have struck me on the trip.

It was my brother, I think, who first noted that, whenever Mrs FEEG and I went on holiday, a disaster, either man-made or natural, occurred and somebody famous died. We were in Cyprus, due to fly home the next day, when 9-11 happened, we were in Washington DC when the Bombay (we do not call Rome Roma or Munich Munchen-am-Rhein) hotel siege was in progress.

So, it was with much sadness, we heard of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami that occurred on the day we arrived in Melbourne. One can only extend maximum sympathy to the Japanese and all the others (there were many Australians in the country at the time) and hope they manage to clear up and repair the damage as soon as possible. It will not be so easy to rebuild ruined lives. The other problem is that the poorly designed and very old nuclear power station that was damaged by the quake is presenting so much of a problem, it gives the Greens another excuse to try and return us all to the Stone Age.

The other thread to this post is the demise of  the famous. Soon after we arrived in Oz, we heard of the death of Jet Harris, one of the founder members of the Shadows, née Drifters, a group who so many teenagers of my era, including me, tried to emulate. This was very sad and then we learned of the demise of Elizabeth Taylor. As my cousin, with whom I was discussing this on our return, said, ‘Jet Harris may not have been so famous as Liz Taylor, but he was a better bass guitarist.’.

Finally, I guess this will not mean so much to many people, but Mrs FEEG is an old movie nut, so I guess at least OMG may have heard of the death of Farley Granger. He was most famous for his role in Alfred Hitchcock’s “Strangers on a Train”. So, on this trip we had a major disaster and a triple whammy of celebrity deaths. Let us hope our next trip is not so eventful in this sphere!!

  1. What a lovely post Feeg, despite the demise of so many celebs. Jet Harris’s death was a bit of a shock, and many who read and heard this news, were probably muttering ‘who was he’. Cliff Richard has spoken out about him since the accusations of him ignoring him, and his illness. Sad that a death brings about such things.

  2. Nice one FEEG,

I’ll bet there are now celebs the world over who eye your calender with fear, and refuse to leave the house whenever you and Mrs FEEG go for a jolly. 😀

  3. We know people who ask us when we are going on holiday and then avoid the same dates – fue to our run of bad weather over many years 🙂

  4. Know the feeling, I managed to be driving down the East German border whilst Chernobyl was exploding! For a whole week!!
I’ve given up holidays, how many endurance tests does one have to put oneself through?

  5. Good one Feeg, truth is your Oz trip proved your travel jinx does not exist, none of our politicians died; you should have asked me before coming here, I would have given you a list, a very long one. 😦

  6. I can only agree with Donald’s analysis – he could have given you a long list of pollies to be removed and I could have added to it!

    🙂

  7. Boa, Donald:

OK. next time I will give you more warning of any impeding visit to the Antipodes, but only if you promise to polish off a few of our own unlovely troughers next time you visit Europe!
