March Confidential (C/W competition)

Good evening.

I didn’t realise the difficulties in setting up a competition. With great power comes great responsibility (Stan Lee…again). After discarding hackneyed taxi ideas and wearing out lots of crayons, this is the best I can come up with for the March creative writing competition.

Rock Hudson was a Hollywood star with a very secret private life, Nick Leeson was a trader that kept his dealings from his firm. The theme will be about someone or thing (institution, golf club, whatever) having a secret they take great pains at to hide. Eventually, the truth will out. It’s your decision if it ends up good or bad.
To complicate matters I’d like to see the word snakes used in the script either metaphorically or literally (just an excuse to give Snakes on a Plane another plug).

The pressure of judging will be new to me, though I am looking forward to reading lots of entries. Happy writing, everyone, go on, pick those crayons up.

Usual rules apply. 2,000 words. Closing date is the last day in March.

  1. JW, gonnae bend your rules just a wee thing? I know that we all have word-counters but it’s going to be a right pain to bring our tales in at exactly 2,000 words, in my opinion.

And, because, as you must realise by now, I really can not help myself, what time in which time zone of what year in which calendar in respect of ‘the last day in March’?

That apart, cracking theme, by the way!

Although I still believe that ‘SOAP’ may well not be Samuel L’s best film to date in some ways.

  2. Just to stir the pot a bit – is that a maximum or a minimum of 2,000 words?

    🙂

  3. Me too. More than 2,000 words makes my brain ache.

Going away to start thinking now.

    OZ

  4. That’s uncommonly generous of you, my dear chap, but I’ll take my chances. As you yourself said, “First up, best dressed.” 🙂

    OZ

  5. I fancy a crack at this but when I posted my last effort the words kept slipping back as I typed. Some kind soul on here suggested that I type up a word doc and then insert it, is that ok?

  6. oldmovieguy :

… the words kept slipping back as I typed.

Um, OMG, sorry, but I don’t understand what you mean by that. 😥
But never mind, post it any way you like and Boadicea or Soutie or I will slap it into life. 😀

  7. Mornin’ OMG – You can compose your magnum opus in Word or similar then copy & paste it into the ‘new post’ section, then upload it as normal. Works for me. Don’t forget to leave a link to it on this page.

    OZ

  8. Yes you can do that OMG.

Just be sure that when you paste it into the editor that you click on the ‘Paste as Text’ icon. (It’s on the bottom row next to the big A – ‘select text color’)

A dialogue box will open, and you can paste into that. It’s quite simple.

Doing it that way strips all the Word formatting and you won’t get odd font, in an odd size. More to the point, we won’t have to manually remove the formatting so that people can read it easily. It’s an absolute pig of a job and the last thing one wants to face first thing in the morning! 🙂

  9. I knew I’d forgot something; that Crazy Little Word Called Max. Max words-2,000 as per the usual rules.

Not knowing if March has 30 or 31 days I’ve covered all bases by calling it the last day in March. That’ll be the last day in March according to my watch which is…let me see…two minutes fast.

Well done OZ, you have cheetah speed in your wolf blood.

  10. Thirty days hath September,
    April, June and November.
    All the rest have thirty-one
except for February alone, yada yada…..

    OZ

  11. That might be so, OZ, but it doesn’t apply to those of us who live in a different time/space continuum. Watch is fast, time is slow etc.

  12. Thank you to all the contributors. Looking forward to reading
your entries, though dreading, very much, the judging.
10 or 11 days to go,
or is it 9 or 12? I dunno.

  13. My friend Granville would like to enter a story to this month’s competition, but he has had trouble registering here. May he enter under my account?

  14. What problems is Granville having? All he has to do is register with WordPress and put a comment here.

  15. I have just re-read the competition rules, TR, and noticed the requirement for a mention of snakes, which I had previously overlooked. I therefore withdraw my entry.

    Bearsy, good evening.

    1. Don’t do it. Superb entry and all that JW is saying is that he would like to see ‘snakes’ being mentioned and he is not insisting on their presence, in my opinion.

    2. If the youtube entry in my #27 does not fix itself, please help?

    3. Off this blog but on another, think you are right about Shane Watson when Pup fails. Seems like a good bloke.

  17. JM – I fixed your video as soon as you posted it. There must be an equals sign after the word 'youtube', rather than a space. Everyone seems to be getting this wrong recently, but no matter, it doesn't take long to correct.

Perhaps I should leave it to TR to adjudicate?

Hilditch and Neilsen have to go!! 👿

  18. Half a day to go, I think. Tomorrow night I will decide on the winner.

As you live in Australia I can understand your reluctance to insert snake in your text, Bearsy. It’s no big deal and your entry will be included.

  19. Welcome Granviller. You are more than welcome to join in the discussions and competitions here!

It was decided some time ago that only entries that were actually posted here would qualify – and those posted on other sites would not be acceptable.

All the reasons behind this decision are far too long winded and buried in history to go into here, however would you please copy your entry into a new post here so that our readers do not have to whizz around cyberspace to read it. 🙂

You have been added as an author.

  20. Thanks, Boadicea and Bearsy, but I think I’ll just withdraw it. I don’t have time to edit it today, and I feel it’s pretty tightly written already.

    Maybe another time.
