This is another one that raises the hairs on the back of my neck. I’m a little ashamed to say that it’s the only song from Turandot that I know 😦
Listening to this sent me looking for Pavarotti, (half my music’s back in Cyprus, drat!) and I found this rather interesting ‘play-off,’ if anyone has a few mins to spare:
Agreed, there are good recordings by all the leading tenors, Pav’s probably the best known. A real showboating number.
Placido’s timbre and range leave this little fellow struggling for breath and tightening his belt another notch.
Bravo, you’d better liquify your Cypriot assets and fast! When Greece goes down, it’s wannabe province will follow it, I’m sure.
Janus, even in the best of times Cyprus floats on a sea of debt, (and corruption.) No assets there that i can’t walk away from. 🙂
Janus, I used to think likewise, but the more I listen to Carreras, the higher I rate him.
The resident expert, Mrs M, is with Janus on this one. I am informed that Placido has the better and more dramatic voice and, for the proper purpose of the song which is as part of an opera and not just a party piece, he is a far better actor than either Jose or Pavarotti.
If we all thought the same, John, the world would be a sad place.
Oooh yes, love it Mr Zen.
