Light It Up Blue – (a repost)

I’m reposting this from last year, a couple of comments caught my attention (today 04/04/2013)  and I thought it pertinent.

Table Mountain

As part of the World Autism Awareness Day campaign owners of buildings, monuments etc have been encouraged to light them up blue, here’s a sample from last year; Continue reading “Light It Up Blue – (a repost)”

Autism Awareness Day

It’s that time of the year again, Tuesday, April 2nd is the officially designated World Autism Awareness Day

Autism Eastern Cape officially opened it’s Adult Care Facility today, (at last, 10 or is it 12 years after the need was first recognised?)

We had a big wig fly down for the opening function from the department of social services (that’s her on the left) and after a very brief ceremony, prayer, introduction, speech it was all over in 20 minutes or so.

The ribbon across the door had to be repaired after one of the children oblivious to the pomp and ceremony ran through it snapping it in half but after a hasty repair all was well.

As you all know by now, you can’t have an autism function without the releasing of balloons…

Somebody to love

No no, not The Queen song but my new T shirt.

As you can clearly see, it states that I love someone with autism, it could have actually read that I love all people with autism 😉

But, is it ‘someone’? Or should it be ‘somebody’?

Or does it even matter? Is either OK?

Answer / advice below please.

Thank you.

Casual Day 2011 – Feedback

Some of you may remember my Casual Day post where I explained that down here we have a national programme allowing people to go to work on the 1st Friday in September dressed either casually or join in with the Rock star theme for the purchase of a R10.00 (£1) sticker.

I mentioned that we were hoping to sell about 3,000 of them, we (Autism Eastern Cape) receiving a 40% share. Well, we sold almost 5,500! Beyond our wildest dreams, this being our first time at participating in the sale of stickers.

Needless to say it was a festive funfilled day.

Our local radio station joined in with a corporate challenge, ‘Worn to be Wild’ they called it, offering a R10,0000 (£1,000) advertising contract to the business which, in their opinion submitted the best photos of their staffs efforts, I’ve added a couple below Continue reading “Casual Day 2011 – Feedback”

Casual Day 2011

Actual size

Do you have a Casual Day?

Here’s how it works, one day a year (usually the 1st Friday in September) people are encouraged to buy an official sticker for R10.00 (less than £1) and on that day they can go to work, school, university, wherever in casual clothes.

The project has been running for 16 years now, organised by The National Council for Persons with Physical Disabilities in SA (NCPPDSA) but the big difference this year is that we Autism Eastern Cape are an official distributor.

Which means that we are allowed to keep R4.00 of every ticket sold! 🙂

We’ve been working on this project since about May, hassling friends, walking up to complete strangers, Continue reading “Casual Day 2011”

Wind Farms

I received an E-mail today asking for help, I repeat it here hoping that some members may be able to offer advice or help.

Good day to you, I run a care facility just outside of Vredenburg where I care for 47 intellectually disabled adults, a substantial number of which are Autistic.

We have just been informed of a developer who is proposing to erect a wind farm on the property bordering ours with 45 wind turbines up to 154 metres high.

I am very concerned about the impact of this proposed project on my sensitive Residents and would be pleased if you could guide us as to any medical papers relating to the impact that these turbines spinning 24 hours a day as well as the associated noise from them would have on Continue reading “Wind Farms”

Collection tins

My brief today was to find a way to secure our collection tins, (we’ve just been given 400) to counters in bars, supermarkets, wholesale shops well anywhere actually.

It’s a pretty simple operation, I had a meeting with a few mates, we’re going to get the wire and such donated and we reckon that if we take a table over at one of our local sports bars we’ll get the job done in an afternoon.

The tin you see on the left is my sample, we used it to discuss drill bit sizes and other silly requirements.

It’s full!

Unbelievably as we were sitting at our table people kept coming up and putting money into it, one lady had no change so folded a ten rand note and slid it through the slot!

Just to change the subject…

Tonight’s our music trivia fundraiser, usually 15 tables of 8 at R65.00 per head, Continue reading “Collection tins”
