A ‘bak’ is a bowl or dish, a ‘bakkie’ is by definition a small bowl or dish, the ‘ie’ giving the diminutive.
I have a feeling that Datsun produced a half ton pick up and called it a bakkie (although the word was already in use.) Sure is a lot easier on the tongue than pick up or LDV, LUV etc.
Should one ask what a busy man does in his very limited spare time? 😉
