Sylvan Beach to Utica (via Rome) August 3

Late off today, stormy morning and rain.

6

Finally got rolling at 10:00 when things started to settle down.

The Erie is now a canal, one cut or modified in modern times and built for powered craft only (no towpaths).  Straight as a Roman Road for miles at a time.

1

Intersecting only occasionally with the Mohawk River, usually with a guard gate to divert excess water into the river channel in times of storm (off to the right here)

5

6 miles later Lock 21 (20 feet rise) followed 18 miles later by Lock 20 (16 feet) at Rome (home of the MIL-Spec for those in the know).   No lock pictures they are big barge locks with greasy ropes to hang on, not picture material.

Into Rome- where a celebration was taking place (Saturday today) lots of tents and events and a good line of Porta- Potties in the left foreground.

3

In a few spots the old canal can still be seen, here off the channel a Marina occupies the old works, that low and narrow bridge is something of a deterrent for us.

4

Finally arrived at lock 19  (10 miles later) where we stopped,  prior to the lock in this case, on the South wall (water and electric supplied).

Utica – a pleasant enough spot, restaurant on premises.7

Will run lock 19 tomorrow and then make a stop in Little Falls about 20 miles on, to beat the weekenders.  Easy running.

  1. Morning JHL, yes outside the restaurant, there was a big Saturday night “do” going on so they neglected/or chose not to collect mooring fees, another free night.

    Thanks PPG, more to come.
