Into Canada, July 4, 2013.

Left the nation on her birthday, not deliberate just worked out that way.

Decided we could not reduce our on board alcohol to the level required by law so had to jettison a gallon of Vodka, a pint of tequila…….

and three bottles of red wine, the geese seemed to enjoy it.

Late start due to fuelling, watering and pumping holding tanks (water was free, diesel was $4.69 per gallon (US size)  still cheaper than Canada (litre measures only)

Met one front and lots of rain as we reached the North end of the lake.

Crossed the line about one cleared customs at two and anchored about four.

About thirty miles.  Anchored behind Isle L’hopital in the Richlleau River (Quebec side) but due to the surfeit of water it is more like Trees l’hopital the island being totally under water.

Now officially flying a courtesy Maple Leaf.

  1. Your first photos brought tears to my eyes, LW. This seems a dreadful sacrifice to have to make to visit Canada.

  2. What a stupendous sacrifice. Couldn’t you have put it in the fuel tank or is it a diesel? 🙂

  3. Yikes, I agree with all of the above, I think I would rather have lurked in US waters than pour booze away. I suppose it depends on the price though. 🙂

  4. All of the above discussed at length, before the sacrifice, First Mate insisted on calling the Canadian government to discuss Duty owed ($8 Cdn per bottle for the wine) More than we paid for it in MD.

Vodka was $10 Gallon Tequila $6 per bottle MD prices (duties were twice that) I don’t drink that stuff anyway so the fishes gain was no loss to me.

I did top up the fuel tanks before we left US waters, Diesel $4.69 per US Gallon (300 gallons, $1,398 US plus NY tax, thank you). It is $1.45 Cdn per LITRE!! up here.

  5. YOU SHOULD HAVE JUST TAKEN IT AND KEPT QUIET/LIED!
Did they actually bother to search the boat?

Oh my, that is divorce territory!

I shall be passing through Canada/UK with 1200 cigarettes without a qualm in a few days time lining my suitcase, robbing bastards, anything you can get past them is fair game!
On second thoughts, forget the divorce, go straight for murder!

  6. Re the price of Canadian gas-someone has to pay for their immigration policy!!!!!

  7. Hello Mrs O. No they did not search, but the boat was tied to their dock while I was in their air conditioned portacabin, holding two passports and wearing only shorts and flip flops, not a good bargaining position. Odd though, they were much more concerned about whether I had any firearms or ammunition (are you sure?), than whether I had a few cases of Chateau Bigbucks in the bilge. Much ado……

  8. I’ve always found Canadian customs really weird.
They once confiscated a pot of home made raspberry jam of mine! (Arseholes!)
They once wanted to make something of the three dogs in the car, until we produced their passports which consequently they didn’t bother to open. It appears to me that they only make aggravation when they think they can make it stick! Nowadays I wave the dogs passports with our own, they don’t want to know!

How I envied my son crapping on the customs. As an infant in Chicago he sat on the table as I was unpacking hand luggage, went red faced, gruffed and a malodourous green cloud emanated from his nappy. They couldn’t get rid of us quickly enough. The boy and I laughed over that for thirty years. Absolutely splendid! The only person I ever knew that gave shit back to the customs, literally!

Next time tell the !st mate not to be so neurotic! What a waste, doesn’t bear thinking about!
