Tony Robinson

The mysteries of the British honours system usually leave me yawning but this time a particularly unprepossessing, second-rate actor with pretensions to adequacy as a tv presenter caught my eye.

One Tony Robinson, a non-academic dig enthusiast, ever-present at political events and a sycophant of the first water is now to be addressed as ‘sir’. Gawd ‘elp us!

  1. Now then Janus. Dear, dear, tut-tut. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

The guy has a stack (5, I believe) of Honorary Doctorates from various seats of learning, is a tireless worker for Equity and earns more than a bob or two from his many ventures.

    Besides, Boadicea likes him. ๐Ÿ˜€

  2. Anyone who enthuses the general public with enthusiasm for history has my vote.. ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. I don’t know this chap, been away too long. But generally I agree, most of the gongs are dished out to arselickers, creeps and general parasites.
Fancy dishing out gongs to idiots who run around fast or sing!
I might point out that a lot of reasonable humans do not accept gongs, they do not want to be put in the same boat as recipients they despise and consider that they were adequately recompensed for their work anyway.
They are always asked discreetly if they will accept it first and given the choice to refuse.

    Not by me.

  5. I omitted to mention his ‘colourful’ private life too, at one point accommodating a new squeeze in his marital home.

As I said, his toadying has paid dividends.

I still think he is an annoying little git who should have stuck to acting the fool in Blackadder. I think Lucy Worsley and Dan Snow should get far more recognition

  8. Haw Janus!

Steady on there. You are maligning a close up and admittedly over-familiar passing acquaintance.

Sir Tonyโ€™s first TV incarnation was as a member of โ€˜Who Dares Winsโ€™ on Channel 4. A series which I hugely enjoyed despite the fact that they were all anti-Blessed Margaret scum.who were no better than they should have been. In my opinion.

Whatever, They were seriously funny. So, Mrs M and I signed up for their Embra Festival Fringe show in August 1987. Mrs M is a thespian and game for any theatrical experience but I have this horror of audience participation so dragged her protesting self to the third back row on the grounds that we would be safe.

The standing (sic) joke was that Sir T. had been conned out of his clothes. He kept appearing in plaintive mode clutching his dignity. Eventually, they told him that his clothes were at the back of the auditorium so off he set.

As he clambered towards us, it became clear that it was going to be either Mrs M or me. I like to think that he looked into my eye and realised that she was not an option if he seriously valued said dignity.

T’was thus that he arrived in my immediate ken, Over the row in front,, bared and hairy legs planted on my thighs and his dignity right in my face. I was not impressed, to be fair.

But. after all these years, arise, Sir Tony. I’ve seen worse.

In the spirit of Wimbledon (c’mon Wee Andy). please delete my first attempt at commenting.which pre-empted itself.

  9. As far as I can gather, JM, you were not impressed with Sir Tony’s “dignity” but have “seen worse”. Do tell!
