Three Ds plus one

What is it they say? Death, divorce and dimissal cause most stress and turmoil? Well, just add Disruption by Removal!

When we arrived on 6th May, all but our beds and a few essentials went into the barn – fifty boxes included! And since then we have slowly reclaimed the house room-by-room from the crew who have been re-laying floors, refitting the bathroom and installing new bits of pumbing and wiring for the kitchen appliances. It was all supposed to be done before we arrived but the best laid plans of mice and men…. The main thing is we’re more than happy with the result – a spacious, comfortable farmhouse away from the madding crowd.

And tomorrow we’re promised the arrival of this little puppy:

He’s a feisty little Italian from Venice – to help me tame the  grasslands in our clearing in the wood. Soon, we hope to be joined by a little pussy cat but we don’t know when.

Luckily we’ve been blessed by lovely Spring weather with just a few short, sharp showers. And the birds have been kind enough to wake us in time for the invasion of plumbers, carpenters and electricians each day. To be honest we haven’t miss the telly at all – although it’s now available, courtesy of a dish on the east gable, in two locations – one for Mrs. J and one for the sports fanatic.

This message itself comes to you, allegedly, via a telephone cable and a ‘router’ box which sends wireless signals to my laptop anywhere in the house. Apparently it’s known as wi-fi. Weird. Are we getting a bit too old for all this gadgetry? Probably. Our first shock on arrival was that my ‘old’ wireless internet service refused to work in the boondocks so we had to find an alternative which took until yesterday to install.

Any road up, we’re ‘in’, with paint brushes at the ready to convert the walls from faded magnolia to pristine white. Mrs J’s just about finished the living-kitchen and I’m on with the sittting room. Only five rooms to go!

An innocent victim of this continuing adventure is Bilby’s pome comp – sorry, Bilbers! The muse seems strangely absent these days.

  1. WiFi is very handy when you have a multiplicity of computers in a household, especially competing with TVs.
Glad to hear it all went satisfactorily, if somewhat delayed.
You have my sympathy re moving in slowly, when we moved here from Dallas the expected arrival of the removal truck was delayed TWO weeks, the fools came right up the right hand side of the Rockies/Cascades and then couldn’t get through the passes, all snowed in! Turned round and had to go south and cross into California and come back up the coast right to the top!!! Fortunately we had bought a blow up mattress with us. (Hotels and a multiplicity of dogs do not go too well!) We spent the time decorating too! Quite handy really I doubt we would have bothered to decorate otherwise, we never have since, too much effort these days.
We had to redo our bathroom too, It was a puke ridden manky vitriolic yellow! That had to go PDQ!

Perhaps we may have some pictures in due course, at least of the ‘gardens’ and woods.

  2. WiFi is absolutely essential, Janus. We’ve had in this house for years.

Regarding the unpacking, when we decamped to our present abode, and we had to store oodles of stuff, it took months to unpack.

I was moaning about this to my next door neighbour, and she said they had lived in their house for 35 years and they still have one bedroom and and an attic filed with packing cases.

I thought they were joking, but they weren’t!

  3. When I met spousal unit I discovered stuff in the Dallas house that had been shipped from NY 28 years previously! I put it straight to charity, never opened it he hasn’t asked for any of it ever in the last ten years!
    Beyond!!!!

  4. Welcome ‘home’ 😉

Even wireless new fandangled trickery wont let you post a picture from your (or somebody else’s) mail account, I’m afraid that you have to still save it, upload it and post it from there 🙂

  5. Glad all went smoothly with the actual completion and move. I’m looking forward to seeing photos of the livestock, but I’m not sure how the puppy will help you tame the grassland. Is he a grass-eating dog?

  6. Hope you enjoy your new home.

Count yourself lucky there are only 50 boxes – we had something like 150 plus! All supposed to have been packed according to room and put in the right ‘place’… I spent four days after moving trying to find where our clean bed-linen, Bearsy’s keyboard, and various other technologically necessary items were hidden.

I refuse point blank to move again… 🙂

  7. Er, Soutie and Sheona, my version of my post shows a garden tractor after the ‘puppy:’ – doesn’t yours? I’ve enlarged him now!

Boa, when we moved here from Cyprus 9 years ago we too had ’00s of boxes. This time we weeded out everything we don’t use or value before we packed! And we packed and named the boxes ourselves – much more reliable!

Move again? Not if hell freezes over!

  8. Trouble is, moving is the only chance of getting rid of anything!

How many acres have you got there Janus?

  9. Your picture was not visible originally when I posted, Janus. If that’s the puppy, what’s the kitten going to look like?

  10. “The muse seems strangely absent these days.”

I’m not surprised, Janus. As muses mostly flee at times of of major upheaval, you are forgiven. Hope you are very happy in your new home.

  11. Christina, we’ve got around an acre to look after – nothing like your rolling hectares! If I find the camera, I’ll try to post some pics! 🙂

  12. An acre is more than enough if you have to dodge trees to mow, makes it very slow. Spousal unit had a new bigger, faster, wider cut mower last year and has managed to cut down mowing time from two days to about 5/6 hours! (Gets him out of the house!) Look forward to pics in due course.
