Tony Greig

1946 – 2012

Born just up the road in Queenstown, educated at Queen’s College, a legend in these parts.

It was always evident in his commentary how proud he was of Daryll Cullinan and Justin Kemp, both Proteas, both products of Queen’s College but perhaps he kept his greatest accolades for Makhaya Ntini, a product of Dale College, located in nearby King William’s Town, a school with close ties, rivalry and camaraderie with Queen’s

I had the pleasure of attending a breakfast with Tony Greig, it was apparent that he loved his trips here and the company of fellow South Africans.

His commentary sessions with Benaud, Lawrie and Chappell are legendary, always balancing the Aussie spin.

Nothing would have given him more satisfaction than the recent Proteas series win, he might have played for and captained England, lived in Australia but I suspect his heart was always here.

  1. My memory of him is that his rôle for England was viewed in the UK rather like KP’s. But when he decamped to Oz and Kerry Packer (?) he won very few British admirers. Great player. RIP

  2. Môre Janus, we saw very little (none) of his playing career, sports embargo, no TV, etc. I can well imagine the chagrin of the Brits when he upped sticks and joined Packer’s World Series. He captained the World XI which included are very own Barlow, Le Roux, Rice, Procter and Richards. I thought that Graeme Pollock also went to WSC, perhaps the final season which I think was cancelled after reconciliation with the various boards.

Lots of glowing tributes from recent and current pros, more than one mention how his actions revolutionized playing conditions and pay!

  3. Soutie, like many greats, he was not afraid to open his mouth, sometimes putting his foot in it. He was accused of racism (the media loved to stir the apartheid pot) but the Windies never agreed with his critics. Certainly, as one paper says today, the history of cricket can be summarised as Before Tony and After Tony.

  4. We lost Christopher Martin-Jenkins this morning too. The commentating world will be a duller place in 2013.
