The Dark Side, RIP

Not only is the Dark Side the main reason why I post my rants on The Chariot, but now the DT wants money from me to view their grammatically inaccurate and increasingly liberal unfocussed ramblings online.

So, after more than half a century, it’s bye bye DT.    When you pay Boadicea and Bearsy several shedloads of money to run your site as well as this site is then, maybe, just maybe, I’ll put up the occasional post or two.

Just loping around. Extremely fond of roast boar in particular, meat in general and cooking on the barbie. Fish is good too.

  1. It is the way of the world, OZ.

The Australian became pay-to-view some time ago and we didn’t bother any more with that particular newspaper.

Journalists here (and I suspect in the UK) seem to have an over-inflated opinion of their ramblings and believe that people will pay to read them.

  2. Ironically, we did used to pay for print editions of newspapers before the on-line versions became available at no cost, which is why we are now reluctant to pay!

I certainly think that The Telegraph is not the serious newspaper it used to be, and I certainly would be reluctant to pay for it, but they have to make money somehow.

  3. I stopped reading the DT some time ago. The quality of reporting was growing ever worse for some time but this year it collapsed. Most of the good writers, the best commentators be it Gerald Warner, Toby Harnden (though he was always a bit shaky and inconsistent), etc have moved on. Many of the best reader-commentators have moved on only to be replaced by increasingly mediocre and uninteresting drivellers.
I’ve started reading the Japan Times as, save for their irritating US reporters, have intelligent commentary that treats readers like adults with functioning minds.

  4. Doesn’t seem to have happened yet to me here in the USA. Perhaps there is a time lag!
    Will check tomorrow.
Don’t think I’d pay either. I would have to see what papers were still available free online.

Hasn’t happened to me either, perhaps they are keeping it ‘open’ for us poor third-worlders!

My regional daily which I purchase every day has recently gone pay for view, as has my Sunday read which I also purchase every week.

Despite having bought the papers I can’t access their online editions.

My lack of online access in no way inhibits my ability to forward news items, there are always alternative sources!

By the way, My local BP petrol station is currently offering a free 2l Pepsi with each Sunday Times purchased! Now there’s a deal that you can’t get online 😉

  6. Still free here – like every other social service you can imagine. I too gave up the Times.

  7. Have hit the wall this morning. Will have spousal unit try LW’s wheeze before parting with a princely 1.99/month!

  8. These paywalls seem to be spreading. Le Figaro now has articles available only to subscribers and with the Frankfurter Allgemeine, everything seems to disappear behind the wall the day after publication.
