  1. For the non-mathematicians and the non- engineers,

31 in octal (base 8) represents the same quantity as 25 in decimal (base 10).

    Hence humour. 🙂

  2. Not sure ‘they’ ought to have let you lot out!
Damn, spousal unit tottered off mumbling about octals etc I just thought he was losing it faster than usual! That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

  3. Thanks LW and Bearsy.

I was going to explain today, but there is no need now. I did say it was one for nerds. 🙂

  4. Double sob! The NSW has just woken up demanding, for some reason best known to herself, the collective noun for frogs. Why is my life so difficult?.

    OZ

  5. I was one of the victims of that experiment known as New Maths. My classmates and I wasted 2 years learning about Set Theory and Bases and other more obscure areas of mathematics instead of the conventional stuff that other 12-14 year-olds were learning. When the syllabus reverted, we struggled to catch up, or at least I certainly did.
I never learned logarithms and I suck at calculus.

On the plus side, I got FEEG’s joke.
