Malta, GC.
They fought amidst the wartime skies,
The victors lived, the vanquished died.
The brutal facts, it was because
The Reaper threw the dice.
Malta was the chosen field
On which no friend or foe would yield.
Those aircraft were the island’s shield;
The Reaper threw the dice
The legend said they had three planes
And four brave men to fly them.
It was not true; it matters not.
The Reaper threw the dice
The Spirit of the one in three
A wooden plane, Sweet Charity
She was the last of them because
The Reaper threw the dice.

At the time, the fighter aircraft on Malta consisted of a few obsolete Gloster Sea Gladiator biplanes. A common legend has it that the air defence consisted of just three such planes, nicknamed ‘Faith’, ‘Hope’ and ‘Charity’, but at least six were deployed. These were initially unable to fly from Luqa Airfield as it was not finished, and operated out of Hal Far.
