Wow…

This is a picture of a SINGLE , relatively simple, molecule containing just five aromatic carbon rings. It may not mean much to you, but this molecule is called olympicene for fairly obvious reasons and it is just one billionth of a metre across.

Once, when Michael Faraday was asked by a politician, “But of what use is your electricity?”, he replied , “Why, sir, one day you will be able to tax it!”. I think the same might apply here.

Olympicene

You can read more about it here.

  1. Pseu :

do tell more of its use…..

is it to do with superconductivity?

Pseu: I am not sure that olympicene has any major uses. I was thinking more of the techniques for photographing individual molecules. If you see what they actually look like, it will be easier to synthesise them and create new ones. Who knows where that might lead, good or bad?

  2. When molecules are photographed they nearly all conform to this latticed appearance. This is true for both biological living molecules and inert chemical substances.
It is actually the interface between biology/chemistry/physics.
It is the basic building block of our world.
There is quite a lot of research going on at Stanford CA into this currently. My boy was in correspondence with a professor there for some years which is why I know about it.
Should any have a real interest in pursuing this further, try back issues of the scientific journal ‘Nature’ where there have been various articles on the subject.
