Will Meryl do Julia next?

Awesome photo: Meryl Streep as Maggie Thatcher in Film4 part-production The Iron Lady. Australia"s Prime Minister Julia Gillard speaks during a news conference at Parliament House in Canberra on 27 February, 2012

I can’t wait for the announcement that Ms Streep, still bouffant from her Maggie efforts, will accept the challenge presented by Australia’s own iron lady, who has seen off her closest rival in short order.  It was understandable that the top 2012 oscar honours went to a silent film, when the alternative was to reward  those famously strident tones echoing along Downing Street. But as voices go, Julia’s deserves to be immortalised too – and who better than Meryl to pull it off? A bit of a red rinse and hey presto!

  1. For heavens sake! The thought of Julia lecturing us like backward children for another 18 months is thoroughly depressing. The idea of a film about her is appalling… could one ask for that to be silent, too?

  2. No Christopher – ‘The Steal’ Lady…

A rather appropriate title in view of the way she got the top job…

  3. Mornin’ all. I still don’t understand this despite a lot of reading and listening. As far as I can ascertain Kev seems to command popular support in the country whereas Julier has the votes that matter – within the ALP. If the Labour Party bigwigs are so up themselves that they ignore the electorate, then they deserve a good hoofing at the next election.

    Or am I wrong?

  4. You are right OZ, and they will get a drubbing.
Rumours are that by the time the election is called, Bill Shorten will be the leader. Bill has the sneaky advantage that he’s the Governor-General’s son-in-law. But Labor will still be demolished. Your average Bruce and Shelia on the Bondi tram hate the way Labor has behaved and will vote for the drover’s dog rather than keep them in power. Many people think that Tony Abbott is the drover’s dog, so that’s OK. 😀

  5. In my view, the unlovely Julia is the only politician I have seen that makes Gordon Brown seem like an eloquent orator! I reckon Meryl Streep would have her work cut out to get this role spot on!

  6. I watched a good documentary recently (more of which soon) where Julia was interviewed. Mrs C, who has some knowledge of the antipodean accent, burst out laughing when she heard the Gillard voice asking if it was a spoof!

I see Rudd has now gone on record as fully supporting her as he lost the vote. Crackers. i know damn well if I was in his position I’d be gunning for her even more now. I guess I’m too naive in the world of politics to understand his motivation.

  7. Rudd has to ‘back’ Julia – at least on the surface. The spectacle has been described as a ‘soap opera’ in the media – more like a bunch of kids who can’t have a punch up so have had to descend to character assassination.

The Labour Party has lost even more credibility than it had previously, and they have to show a united front. They only have to lose one MP and they’ve lost their majority… and since some of those MPs are, theoretically, independent they’ve almost certainly suffered by association with the ALP.

There will be a lot of Labour and Independent seat losses come the next election…

  8. So he’s as bad as the rest of them then – keeping his party “in power” rather than standing by his principles. I do understand and know it’s the same the world over in so called democracies, but party politics is sickening!

I could never follow one party – there are too many issues to disagree on and there’s no way all of us electorates fit into two or three boxes.

I hope a suitable alternative presents itself to you soon – hell, we could do with one over here too!

    Welcome home, by the way!

I’m back in Oz, now. I’m just totally out of sync with my times. At the moment I’ve been asleep for an hour, woken up for an hour, been asleep for another hour and I’m now sitting here (2.33 am) trying to get myself sufficiently tired to return to bed…

As for politics – we have a State Election on the 24th March. I’ve got a choice of three candidates and want ‘None of the Above’. Labour will get wiped out – for broken promises and on account of the Julia. The Greens are a bunch of communists… and the Liberals are led by a man who looks (and sounds) as if he is quite insane, he is a little Hitler and has no regard for the normal democratic processes. A crazy Independent who has the temerity to stand up against all the parties in the interests of his electorate has started his own party – but I don’t think they are standing in my neck of the woods.

As for Rudd, his only principles are to survive. One analyst reckons if a Federal Election were to be held this Saturday he would be the only Labour Federal MP in the whole of Queensland.

A plague on the lot of them…

Could I interest you in Obama? I’m sure that I could at least 100,000,000 Americans to donate a dollar
if you’d take him. Based on the Republican candidates at the moment, I’m sure Abbott would be embraced by conservative voters in the US.
