For about the last six months or so I’ve been hammering out a decent Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door on my old six-string. By decent I mean if you listen carefully and fade-out the discords, the tune is remotely recognisable. I’ve still a long way to go before I become a busker but it’ll happen eventually. Imagine my surprise and horror when my son came in the other day with an electric guitar that he’d bought.
“You’ve sold your soul. You’re just like Boadicea’s Chariot.” I said.
“What?” he said.
“I mean, Judas Iscariot.” I corrected myself.
Worse than going electric his second-hand axe was a right-hander. He knows I “play” the strummer southpaw. There’s not many things that I favour my left in, though this is one of them. It’s a long story based on a theory I have. I rounded on him once more.
“Ok Jimmy Page. How are you going to play that thing? You’ve no amp.” I aired acoustically.
“Ryan’s bringing one over.”
Oh well. That’s more fights with the neighbours to look forward to. I was about to leave the room when he asked me what was that I had in my hand.
“It’s a…uh…Kindle. I bought it yesterday.”
“Hah! What happened to the born and bred, almighty Paperback Man? Have you changed your text?”
Oh no, a Kindle, please tell me this is not so, JW!
I saw one in Tesco the other day and I resisted the temptation.
Repeat after me, I do not need a Kindle. 🙂
Sorry Ara. I don’t know what’s next? Probably,I’ll be entering the photo competitions. 🙂
I’ve thrown 170 books onto the machine and halfway through one of them. Page numbers are a thing of the past, it’s % of book read now. It’s like learning the metric system all over again.
Blimey, I’m still wondering, JW, how my bookshelves will look with rows of broken Kindles.
I’m not convinced, yet!
Er, I was not aware that they took photos, but then technology is not my bag. 🙂
Jeez you two, get a room why dontcha?
Cripes, Furry, where did you spring from?
I thought JW, and I were the only ones around this evening. 😉
Just catching up on some American Footy Minty MBE.
No they don’t take photos, Ara, I was alluding to my non-existent entries on the photo comps. The Kindle does have wi-fi internet that can display images but not sound. For us Megadeth fans, this is no good.
I’ll speak to you later. Have 169 and a 1/2 novels to finish.
My typing is as slow as my reading. Ferret has played twice while I’ve been fingering the frets.
Hi Ferret, make that 170 and a half books to read as tomorrow I’ll get round to reading your magnum opus.
Night, night, this time.
Night Night Jay Dubya. 🙂
Night night, JW and Furry. 🙂
Don’t wanna go to bed yet and you can’t make me. Ner Ner Ne Ner Nerrrrrr! 🙂
Drat, that didn’t work then. 😉
Jeez you three, get a room why dontcha?
Hee hee!
OZ
Backside has joined the Official Kindle Luddites, JW. Bring back the palimpsest. 😮
Good morning, JW. Not that it is. I take it that you are watching as disaster unfolds in Abu Dhabi? Swann and Broad will have to perform heroics again.
Kindles rool, by the way, where appropriate. Although they will never replace the pleasure of reading a ‘proper’ book, in my opinion, they are brilliant for travelling. We took our entire holiday reading collection to OZ on one. Also great for the free e-book versions of the out of copyright classics which you can get from Project Gutenberg or Amazon.
I don’t understand your bit about no audio? As any fule kno, you can download mp3 files to the music folder and listen to them in the background while reading. One of the highlights of the flight to OZ was listening to 5 or 6 Kermode/Mayo podcasts in a row.
So, it would be perfectly possible to listen to Megadeth on your Kindle if you really feel the need.
Oz and Janus, a Good New Year to you both. JW is counting and will know full well that I have already done Ara, Ferret and the boy himself.
Nothing like a Strat or Gibson Les Paul!
As for Kindle, I prefer my Sony eReader, the screen is slightly bigger and easier to read for a long time. At least we are beginning to get the bookshelves more manageable after 40 odd years of uncontrolled literary acquisition!
All out for 72 !!!!!!!
And if Billy hadn’t been bribed, it would have been half that !!
Oh, frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!
The 2 umpires were Steve and Bruce!
Did Billy cause a faux pas?
Hi Soutie
Bowden was third umpire. They sent a catch off Strauss up to him for review. He was clearly out but Billy inexplicably gave it Not Out.
Didn’t make any difference in the end. Total embarrassment for ‘us’..
You have re-kindled my interest: music while you read….
It’s official – my 15 year old has confirmed – Kindles play music while you read!
I have a dilemma – do I borrow hers for the summer holiday where reading is my main time passer? I think I’m still a tactile man……but space in the luggage is precious!
I couldn’t bear to watch the cricket – as Aggers (not me) said – back to the bad old days 😦
Well done green baggies – but beware the false confidence beating the Indians gives! 😉
Schadenfreude at England’s expense is just not cricket. 😦
Be fair, Janus. ‘We’ would have been seriously schadenfreuding if the Aussies had been gubbed in the same way.
And ‘we’ll’ still be Number 1 if ‘we’ can win the Third Test. I still think that it’s a blip and that things can only get better.
