I believe I’ve mentioned in passing that biltong is available almost everywhere in South East Queensland (not in other States or territories), due to the large influx of Saffers into Brisbane and the surrounding area.
But I was still quite surprised this morning when we went to daughter’s for Sunday breakfast, to find her partner busy at the barbie cooking not only bacon, but also boerewors. ย Apparently it’s now available everywhere in SEQ, including in the large supermarkets – Woolies and Coles.
So I reckon Sipu should stop regarding Queensland as a foreign country with a strange culture. ย It’s merely an outpost of SA, now. ๐
I had some very well prepared boerwors in a good steakhouse in Melbourne on our recent trip to Oz. Very nice they were too. Also, we have a good Saffer supermarket near to where we live. Since my late mother-in-law was from Port Elizabeth, she often cooked some very appetising South African dishes (mind you, she buggered up some English ones a treat ๐ )
I’d kill for koeksisters…
Ha Ha Ha ๐
You’ll be on the brandy and coke next ๐
I have a feeling that your Woolies is a division of Woolworths S.A. headquartered in Cape Town, that might explain the availability of ‘S.A. type items’
Sorry to burst your bubble, Soutie, but your little Woolworths doesn’t have any connection with our giant. ๐
Well, Bearsy, with news like that, Brizzie is certainly sounding more attractive. But I have to say that the best ‘boerrie’ I ever tasted was in Edinburgh, of all places. Back in the late 70s some friends of mine were working on the oil rigs in the North Sea. On their time off they returned to their digs in Embra, where lacking decent sustenance, yet flushed with cash, they instructed their local butcher on the finer points on the preparation of this epicurean delight. The results were fantastic. The finest beef, pork and various spices went into making a stunning ‘wors’ that satisfied my particularly discerning taste buds.
Biltong, as you will have discovered, is an equally marvelous addition to the menu, but I have to admit that sushi is the one food that I could eat til I dropped dead.
Bearsy: has Afrikaans been declared a recognised minority language of SE Queensland yet?
Sipu: a great irony is that the best sushi I have ever eaten was in Rancho Cordova, a rather underwhelming Sacramento, California suburb. The restaurant is located in an old 1970s/1980s pancake restaurant building built in such a style that it looked dated even before the ground was broken. It was a bit of a shock to go to Tokyo and find the sushi there to be nothing spectacular.
So there you go, Sipu! ๐
My Aussie grandson is so fond of biltong that he learnt to make it himself.
I’m not sure about that, Christopher, but the accent is certainly accepted and biltong is a staple for cricket matches, so I guess it’s only a matter of time. ๐
Christopher, irony indeed, the best French restaurant I ever went to was in Tokyo.
Bearsy: I think you might also need to prepare for the state to change its name to Boerland.
