An unusual birthday present

Mrs FEEG and I have just returned from a visit to our son and daughter-in-law in Washington DC. We had a great time while over there, visiting many new sights (and restaurants) in the DC, Virginia and Maryland area.

While we there, I did receive one slightly belated birthday present from my son and daughter-in-law. They had got me two tickets for the Arizona Cardinals NFL game against the Eagles at Philadelphia. I went there with my son, while Mrs FEEG and daughter-in-law did a tour of some of the cultural sights in Philidelphia that they had not seen before (before sneaking into Pat’s King of Steaks for a Philly cheese steak!)

My son and I went to the game, and watched a game of four quarters, Harry! Two of these were not very good, with both quarterbacks unable to pass straight, and none of the wide receivers being able to catch, plus several missed easy field goals! However, the other two quarters were exciting, with some very good passing and catching. You can see the highlights here.

It did strike me that the NFL fans are as loyal to the point of stupidity as Premiership soccer fans, but even less forgiving when their heroes cock up. The boos when Michael Vick threw a couple of wayward passes was something else. There does not tend to be many away fans as the distances involved are sometimes huge, so there is little or no crowd trouble.

None the less, having consumed a couple of hot dogs and Sam Adams Oktoberfests while watching the game, it was a very different and enjoyable experience, with the Cardinals the eventual winners 21-17.

  1. I had to smile when I read your reference to Philly cheese steak, FEEG.

My daughter has recently returned from a week in Philidelphia, on business, and she ordered one at the hotel on the day she arrived. She’s been taken out shopping and was quite exhausted, so she declined an invitation to eat out, and settled for a PCS room service.

She was so tired she couldn’t eat a thing, and was most reluctant to leave the regional gourmet (?) meal untouched, so she flushed most of it away!

  2. Pity you couldn’t get to a NASCAR race, if there’s any event in the world that I’d like to go and watch it would be a NASCAR race, the whole weekend, trucks (Friday) Nationwide (Saturday) and then the big daddy (Cup) on Sunday, second choice would be a NFL game!

I’m a Michael Vick fan, he just doesn’t have the team around him that Brady, Manning or Rodgers has. Michael Vick could be a superstar, he has it all.

I’m pleased that you enjoyed it, bit different to rugby hey ?
    😉

  3. I have to admit since being here on and off since 1976 I have managed to evade attending any and all professional sports!

  4. Same as Christina, been Stateside many times and never taken in a sporting event, maybe this Christmas when we winter in Florida.

  5. Ara: A good Philly steak sandwich is very good, a bad one is awful!

Soutie. I would like to go to a NASCAR race too, although I think I prefer NFL. I did actually play rugby with some American college guys while I was at Uni. They all had rich daddies and were avoiding the Vietnam draft. Once they had been persuaded not to block and not to pass forward, they were pretty good.

Christina: Have you attended a professional sporting event anywhere?

OMG: Give it a go. It is different over there.

  6. Low Wattage :

For cheessteaks I prefer Geno’s, across the street from Pat’s they certainly have copped an attitude, here’s the sign in their window.

My son and daughter-in-law have the same argument. She prefers Pat’s, he prefers Geno’s 🙂
