I love this, but the subject matter is sad.
Interesting that the reason for the shipping of convicts to Virginia was to reduce the so called criminal population and it was a lucrative business, although not too popular with the colonials, I understand.

It is a sad song, Ara, but one that I find very moving. Reminds me a bit of the Leaving of Liverpool in that lament/dirge of the sea genre, I suppose.

Minty: no, it wasn’t especially popular in the North American colonies. Ironically, the majority of convicts were shipped to the vicinity of what would become Washington, DC. Still, this practice did eventually lead to the creation of Australia so some good came out of it.
