Number 9 Land speed record broken. I think the picture is Mr Noble, I think the driver was RAF pilot Andy Green and I think that they broke the sound barrier for the first time. I also think that John Denver died the same week. But I could be hopelessly wrong
Number 4 has to be the start of the Crimean War?
Sipu
No 9 and no 4 correct!
No3,
The invention of the Christmas Card. Victorian era some time.
Ha, I was nearly right for number 9. The event I was thinking of was when Andy Green broke it on October 15 1997 driving Richard Noble’s Thrust SSC at a supersonic speed of 1223.657kph. I am pretty sure the picture shown is contemporaneous with the later event. John Denver died 3 days earlier on the 12th October. I was in Barbados at the time! Did not enjoy it one little bit.
Ferret, what are you suggesting by that remark? 😉
No.5 is Istanbul Station so I would imagine it’s to do with the Orient Express! Maybe the first trip?
Araminta – that’s right!
Boadicea, I do have to take issue with your choice of card for no 3. Was it deliberate that you selected one that said “Happy Holidays” as opposed to one that mentioned Christmas? Have you gone PC all of a sardine or were you just you shaking a fist at Christianity?
I simply liked the picture, Sipu! I suppose I should have found a Victorian card… but, I didn’t….
Is #10 the first Mini in 1959?
No Sheona…. 🙂
10. Launch of the Morris Mini?
8. I can see Noel Edmonds and that DJ, Wassisface, standing at the back and is that Cliff Richard in front? Most of the eye candy are from Pan’s People. First BBC charity fundraising programme or some anniversary of Top of the Pops?
OZ
10. Must be the last Mini then!
Nah! Launch of the new Mini.
OZ
OZ
500th Top of the Pops. – That’ll do!
Araminta
Yes … the last.
I’ll check to see which one is right later OZ, I’m off to the dentist!
Aha, thanks, Boadicea.
“Boa sorte”, Araminta. Always keep your fangs in good condition, that’s what I say.
OZ
#1. I think this is the guy who produced the very first English translation of the bible. Coverdale, or something like that, so presumably it was published on 4th October.
Handily, I went to a college alumni reunion earlier this year, and amongst the goodies on offer was a tour around an exhibition in the college library about early English bibles. A copy of this picture was amongst the exhibits
2. Pope Somebody does something.
Don’t make me go to Google!
OZ
FEEG
How fantastic!
OZ – yes a Pope something does something….
… and he was…
… and it was …
🙂
Wiki thinks he was Urban VII and he had the shortest papal reign in history. Being Wiki it is probably wrong, so I’m going out to hunt some lunch.
OZ
Aha!
I’ve just done the image-Google-thingy and found out which chief fairy he was – and it wasn’t Urban 7, OZ.
I’ll say no more – but, nice one Boadicea. 🙂
.No 2.. John XXIII, Loreto-Assisi, Italy, October 4, 1962 … the largest crowd ever for a single papal event
Nor is it Johnny 23 – tee hee!
I had to say something, arriving so late!
It was Gregory the something or other of calendar fame!
The 13th, no less.
Yes Araminta…
I actually did a post about this ages and ages ago… 🙂
Don’t forget Innocent 11, who cowned King Otto of somewhere unpronounceable on 4 Oct!
Cor – I missed all the fun. PS Great picture on number One – I think he spotted a misprint.
Bolleaux! I had Gregory number something or other running around in my brain all morning. Couldn’t think why and lunch proved elusive too. Ended ujp with roast partridge and salad on the terrace of a local eatery.
Number 7: Sputnik, 1957.
Yes Christopher!
Number 8 – Radio 1 is launched?

Ferret – Correct!
No 6. First London Underground escalator.
Sipu – right!
Woo Hoo and no Google honest! 🙂

Good quiz as ever, Boadicea. 🙂
